Thomas Robert Batie, a native of Portland, died peacefully in his home March 24, 2018 at the age of 80. He graduated in 1956 from Grant High School, where he made many lifelong friends. He attended the University of Oregon, became inducted into the ATO fraternity and remained an avid Duck fan. He married his high school sweetheart, June Martindale in 1958.
After a successful early sales career in office products, Tom formed his own business representing the products of various manufacturers in the Art field to retail enterprises. His son joined the business, expanding their Northwest regional territory, while his wife June partnered and managed the administrative side. Tom retired in 1999 turning the business over to his son.
Tom and June joyfully welcomed their four beautiful grandchildren in the early 90's, and treasured the times they had with each and all together.
In 2000 Tom lost his beloved wife June to cancer, after 42 wonderful years of marriage.
In 2002 he married Kathleen Cadigan Murphy, a widow. They enjoyed travelling to Mukilteo, Wash., and LaPine, Ore., to proudly watch, applaud and cheer their grandchildren participating in various sports and dance activities.
Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing and played tennis, racquetball and golf. In retirement he loved to golf with the Seniors at Rock Creek Country Club, where he surprised himself by hitting three holes in one at different times. He enjoyed international travel throughout his adult life, as well as road trips within the United States.
Tom's strong work ethic contributed to his business success. However, his outstanding asset was his honest enjoyment of nearly everyone he met. Tom belonged to a group of fishing buddies who fished in Central Oregon for over 50 years. In the past 20 years he had weekly breakfasts with a group of long-time friends who finished the morning with a round of golf as weather permitted. Tom was a modest man with a sharp sense of humor who radiated love and respect for others, placed a high value on his wide circle of friends and felt a deep love for his family.
Tom was predeceased by his parents, Robert Edward Batie and Eva Thompson Batie; his sister, Beverly Hansen; and his late wife, June. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his daughter, Karen Aamodt (Don); his son, Bob Batie (Kathy); and his sons by marriage, James Murphy (Monica) and Jonathan Murphy (Victoria); and his grandchildren, Mary Beth Batie, Riley Aamodt, Mallory Aamodt Manes (Nick) and Thomas A. Batie. He is also survived by his niece, Jan Meyer (Tony); his grandnephews, Jake and Justin; and his great-grandniece, Abby.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 7, 2018, at St.Juan Diego Catholic Church in Portland, with light refreshments following. There will be a burial following at Riverview Cemetery..
