I count myself extraordinarily fortunate to be a colleague of Mrs. Barbara A. Mills at St. Paul’s Lower School, from 1982-1987. After her retirement and my eventual return to St. Paul’s, 2000-2017, I remained in touch with Bobbie off and on through the end of my own teaching career.

It is only in the fullness of time that we gain perspective on the events and people that will ultimately shape us for the rest of our lives, for good or for ill. As a society, the molding and shaping our children, and thus our future, is left in no small measure in the hands of the men and women to educate them. A great teacher is like a candle – the consume themselves to light the way of others.

Bobbie once said to this fledgling teacher, “The good educator tells; the good educator explains; the great educator demonstrates; but the superior educator inspires.” The highest praise I can give Bobbie is that she was a superior educator. A teacher of the broader lessons of life.

Pride, effort, love, and laughter. More than anything else, I believe this describes Bobbie. She worked hard, expected much, cared more. And she had a great time doing it. Bobbie lead by example and she expected nothing more from her charges than she expected from herself. Thank you, Bobbie, for your guiding light to my own path as an educator.

While I am profoundly saddened by Bobbie’s passing, that sadness is tempered by the happy memories and experiences I had as her colleague. We should never be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell id necessary before you can meet again. Until then Bobbie’ memory, her values, and her legacy will surround us and live through us long after this day. I am honored to have known her, and I will miss her.

Farewell for now, Bobbie, until we meet again.
