I have no specific remembrance of Claude England to relate here. I simply want to express my opinion that Claude was not only a superb tennis player but was even a better person. Claude’s had impeccable traits of character, was remarkably self  effacing, and kind to a fault. May he continue to rest in eternal peace.

My condolences to the family and friends of Claude. He will be sorely missed especially by fellow competitive players who were always impressed both with Claude’s prowess as a tennis player and caliber as a human being, one who never cheated or cut corners and always was willing to “give back.”

A tennis icon, locally, nationally and beyond. Of steadfastly honorable character, Mr. England is amongst the kindest souls I’ve ever known. Wishing Mrs. Norma comfort.

Claude was a very special person that has made many lives around him better. On and off the tennis courts, always a gentle soul with the fiery spirit of competition. Today’s celebration of life was very moving and touched all that were there.

Claude you have always shared a special place in our hearts. We remember fondly our shared times with you when you visited Gloria and the family. I especially loved our Mjlford Track adventures with you and Norma always encouraging us girls to keep going. You carried enough on your back for us all. To Claude's family. I'm one of Claude's tennis groupies. Over the years he has always, and I stress, always, made those of us out there struggling with our games or other hiccups in life feel valued. He was a love to be around and always up-spirited and engaged and helpful. He knew his tennis and how to draw as much as possible out of his players. He started by making us feel strong. How kind. Since hearing the news last week, we have all been a little bit down (as well as shocked and heartbroken) and shall remain so for a long time because we know that he made a difference. He left us too soon but shall not be forgotten.

Claude, you have been taken from us all far too early and words can’t truely express the enormity of our loss.  Our hearts and memories will forever be full of love for the extraordinary man that was Claude.

Claude was an acclaimed professional sportsman, adored by his family for his infectious enthusiasm for life, love, generosity and support. Despite the distance you were always present in our lives and there for all of us.  You had an amazing ability to make everyone feel special and this truely shone through on the tennis court.  

Our most treasured memories are the annual trips to celebrate Christmas together. Whether it be playing beach cricket, walking the Milford Track, canoeing the Whanganui River or family time around the Christmas Tree in Baltimore. 

Go well.  Rest In Peace until we are re-united again.

Sharing these pictures when Claude and Norma visited San Antonio, Texas for the first time in November 1996. Claude was a fun person to hang around with. Though our kids were so young when they were here, they had fond memories of their Uncle Claude.  He was a kind and loving person.  A beautiful soul! May you rest in peace!  We love you! 


In 2019 we stayed with Norma and Claude, experiencing wonderful hospitality as usual. Claude was very generous with his time, driving us to interesting sights, including the places where he coached tennis. This photo is of Claude with his NZ friend and tennis colleague, Tony James.

Dear Norma,

Terry and I are so sorry for your loss. We were very sad and upset to hear about Claude and can only imagine how devastating and difficult it must be for you.
Claude was such a lovely, generous person and always positive.
We remember fondly all the fun times we have had together - staying with you in Baltimore, at the US Open and the Ravens v Kansas City Chiefs game. It was always great to catch up with you both in NZ and Terry also remembers the enjoyable golf outings with Claude.

I don't know anyone who didn't like Claude. He was an excellent soccer player and a tremendous teammate. He was always happy and friendly to all. He played hard on the field and was a great encourager as we battled through our talented and aggressive Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. I'm so glad the tennis coach let Claude play soccer also, he was a cherished and valuable part of our team. Claude took our penalty kicks, he has great confidence and could handle the pressure of the moment which was strong from his tennis background.
Deepest sympathy to Norma and all of Claude's family and friends from all of his Maryland soccer teammates. May God comfort you in the most difficult of times.


The American Tennis Association really appreciate all of Claude's support for our  100 anniversary. Rest in Peace such a wonderful person.

So sad to hear of your passing. I had wonderful matches with and against you and your attitude will continue on in your legacy. Also funny moments like standing on Brussels train platform firing old tennis balls at unsuspecting travellers on the next platform while hiding behind the great pillars! Sad to hear this. He was a great tennis partner player and such a nice person. 

What a nice man , what a friendly man , what a modest man, what a kind man. 
He was always pleasant and happy . He had only nice things to say about others. He loved teaching others tennis . 
I met Claude 10 years ago when i arrived in Maryland and since then we often spoke when we would see each other at the Tennis club (Greenspring- Coppermine )
I am 100% sure his presence will be us forever . He is not someone we will ever forget . 


My family is deeply saddened by his sudden passing. He was a man of great talent, character and depth whom we had the honor to know and learn from his watchful eye. His lasting impact upon my family will last on in our hearts and mind. God Bless Claude and his Family. 

Claude was a close friend and such a fun person to play golf and tennis with. I took tennis lessons with him early on Sunday mornings for many years. We loved to talk sports and trade stories. My condolences to Norma and his many friends who considered him as part of their extended family.
