ULLMANN, EDNA VIRGINIA (nee Kelly). Passed away at Brightview Towson on April 9, 2018. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey on January 23, 1922, the fifth of six children of William and Adele Kelly. She grew up in Union City, NJ during the Depression, graduated from high school, and went to work as a bookkeeper to help support her mother and younger sister. She was very active in the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Union City including their renowned Veronica’s Veil Passion Play. In 1953, she married Francis J. (Frank) Ullmann of Jersey City, N.J. and raised his son as her own. Over the next seven years, she gave birth to five of her own children. In 1966, she moved with her family to Timonium, MD, when Frank was transferred by American Oil. Always the devoted wife and mother, she tirelessly worked to keep the house clean, made the kids’ lunches and the evening meal, typed her kids’ term papers, drove them to hobbies and sports events, and supported them in every way possible. When all of her children were in school, she returned to work to contribute towards their education, initially as the first secretary for Church of the Nativity, and later at Blue Cross and other retail jobs. Upon the death of her husband in 1983, and the departure of her children, Edna began to explore her artistic skills. She joined various retiree groups and learned to sketch and paint. She travelled around the country with her siblings and children, and began to take care of many of her grandchildren. She also volunteered for the Alliance for the Mentally Ill (AMNI) and as a caregiver at Stella Maris. Late in life, she moved into a South Baltimore row house and lived there until she was 95. She is survived by one sister, Anna Kelly of Laguna Woods, CA, six children (Donald and Kathy of Conway, SC; Frank of York, PA; Raymond and Kevin of Baltimore; William and Jody of Virginia Beach, VA; and Debbie of Chincoteague, VA), and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
