My heart goes out to your family for the loss of one of the kindest, nicest and funniest people I knew.  Holly and I met in Jr. High and went on to Northern High together.  We became re-acquainted when Holly and George visited our church for a living Nativity when the kids were young.  Holly and I would meet for coffee and donut and catch up, and wind up erasing any time between our visits with laughter and stories.  Her family was so important to her and loved by her...you were the "wind beneath her wings".  It was a blessing to have known Holly and George.... her first love.  Now they are together... oh what a loss for us here.  God's blessings for comfort Cindy and Chris.

Unfortunately, because I live out of state, I couldn't attend Holly's service.  Below is something I wrote that was kindly read during her service: 

Dearest Holly, family and friends:
 
Thank you for taking a few moments to listen to my words.  My name is Barb Elgin and I'm Holly's niece.  Even though I couldn't be here today, I am with all of you in spirit!  
 
Speaking of spirit, today we are celebrating Holly - how she touched our lives and brightened our paths with her unique and beautiful ways of living, laughing and loving.  Friends and family - if you haven't yet, I hope each of you will, in a way that feels authentic to you - share your memories and feelings about Holly with Chris and Cindy.  Your words will comfort both them and yourself.
 
I am heartened as I read all of the loving comments from friends and family on Holly's online guest book.  I too, of course, have many fond memories and feelings.  It's impossible of course, putting how I feel about Holly into a few words.  

What I do know is that Holly WAS so easy to be with and talk to.  Holly had a special way of reminding me to not take myself, or life, too seriously, while accepting and loving me just as I am.  
 
A couple of other reasons she is extra special to me includes the fact we physically resemble each other, and, even though she was my aunt, perhaps I looked up to her as the big sister I never had!  

I am so grateful Holly felt well enough to be able to spend time with me, both last month and during some of my other visits north.  During these visits, I even had the honor of meeting some of her closest friends.  
 
Holly told me, after I brought my rescued miniature pinscher Lucy to meet her a couple of summers ago, that seeing Lucy reminded her how much she wanted another dog.  Shortly afterwards, she adopted her loving Shiz-Tzu Charlie.  I'm sure Charlie gave her lots of comfort and affection these past difficult months and now he's in good hands with Chris and Liam.
 
Chris and Cindy, please be gentle with yourself. And, if or when you need it, (or think you might) just reach out. I know asking can be difficult, but, I am here for you. You have many around you who love you and care. Don't ever think for one moment that you are alone. I know how proud your mom is of both of you.
 
Lastly, thank you Holly for you.  Because you were a master at just 'being you', you helped me 'just be me'.  What more can one ask!?!  Your spirit lives on and in each one of us.  

While in my limited human understand, I am lost as to why God took you from us too soon, I know great lives are not measured in years and it makes perfect sense because you will be with George now.  

And, if I may 'take a page out of your book', I suspect heaven must have needed a new librarian or a talented story teller for the angels!

I have not seen Holly for many, many years.  Our little group, Diane Balling, Nancy Daniel, Holly and I were great friends throughout Jr. and Sr. High School.  A great smile, warm personality was her trademark then and must have intensified through the rest of her life.  Enjoyed the pictures.  Thanks for the memories.  God bless you Holly,

I remember Holly as part of our "Havenwood Family", we would gather around the lunch table and she would tell a story and thenshe would say "Long story short" about 15 mintues later and we loved her for it.  She was a wonderful endearing lady who loved all the children.  Every chiild knew Mrs. Upperco and her media mouse, mixed up slippers, Madeline and Cat in the Hat costumes and her butterflies she set free every spring.  Holly has been set free and she is looking down on all the children as they play and she watches.  She will be missed for a long time.

Our times together at Havenwood with our Havenwood family were so memorable. I remember when you were born, Holly, and it was so exciting to have a second girl cousin in the family.  We both lost our other girl cousin many years ago, so you were Claudia's and my only girl cousin.  I will always recall with love and affection our lengthy phone conversations of some years back just catching up.  I am so happy you finally got to see the Grand Canyon with the love of your life, George.  You will be missed.  Love, Betty Lou

From the day that Randy introduced me to his family at Thanksgiving in 1991, you (and George) did indeed "adopt" me as one of your own. And I am ever grateful to you for the loving care that you always have shown your now 5-year old "grand nephew" Thomas.  Please know that we will love and look out for Chris and Cindy.  We love you all.

Two of the nicest people I have met during my life, Holly Elgin and George Upperco.George and I went to church at Augustana and we were in the same confirmtion class. We also shared classes at Balto City College. I remember when Holly was graduating from Northern H.S. and she and George 1st met. While I have done little of merit in my life the fact that I was one of the people that introduced them is still one of the good things in my life. For them to have had all these years together is wonderful,and then to have great children only adds to their goodness. Love to all the Uppercos,    Craig Piercy

My daughter was privileged to have Holly as one of her teachers at Havenwood and I was privileged to get to work with her for a short time at Havenwood.  She was a beautiful, kind person and I feel blessed to have known her.  We are so sorry that she is gone.  We send our deepest condolences.

In the 35 years I knew her, Holly was always an easy person with which to share a story or memory.  I played softball with George and saw Holly at games and occasional social gatherings.  Conversations with this exceptional woman always made me feel good inside.  She had a way of inviting you to stay and chat for a while.  My admiration for her courage throughout the last two years knows no bounds.  I shall always remember Holly standing beside George, the two of them with smiles of approval and mutual support.  She leaves behind two dedicated children, a loving family, and a legion of friends who can be comforted in knowing she is at peace.  Goodspeed, Holly.

Thanks to Chris and Cindy for posting these beautiful pictures.  What memories they brought back for me.  Holly - I know you and George are looking down on all of us tonight.  Maybe singing a Beatles song!?!  Chris, Cindy, Liam and Phil - my thoughts are with you tonight.

My first impression of you, Holly, was of how thoughtful you were.  I hardly met you and you were showering my daughter with love and gifts from then on!   Always so sweet and positive. I wish I had gotten to know you more--even in the short amount of time I knew you, you blessed my life.
