Born to public school music teacher Robert and homemaker Margaret, he and his sister Roberta grew up in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Jerry participated in Scouts, school theater, and ROTC.
Jerry met Julie when they were undergraduates at the University of Chicago. They married in 1970, and he always told people, “The best thing I ever did was ask Julie to marry me.”
After graduation, Jerry enlisted in the Army. When he was assigned to Fort Sherman in the Canal Zone, he and Julie lived in Colon, Panama. Upon return to the States, Jerry earned his MBA at U of C and began his 40-year career in the advertising industry which moved the family from the Chicago area to the East Coast in the 90s.
Throughout his life, Jerry found community and enjoyment via music. He played guitar at church and sang in community choruses. In his retirement he took classical guitar lessons, and there was always music, live or recorded, playing in the house. His two daughters became professional artists, a dancer and a classical musician. He never missed a concert or performance as they grew up, and he was proud of his girls’ careers in the arts.
After a move to Baltimore in 1998, Jerry learned to sail. He loved cruising on the Chesapeake Bay in his Natty Boh’t and competing in weekly races, despite the fact that his boat was more of a weekend cruiser than a racer. He enjoyed the community he found in his years at Downtown Sailing Center, North Point Sailing Association, and Potapskut Sailing Association.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Julie (Todey), daughters Katie and Amy (Chris), granddaughter Julia in whom he delighted, sister Roberta (Arthur), and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
