Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Joe and Ann (Scanlon) Lubic, Joann possessed an unwavering smile and a natural beauty that warmed every room she entered. She graduated from Carlow College with a degree in nursing following a distinguished high school career that included being named Mayflower Queen, among other honors.
Soon after college, she met and married William E. “Bill” Hughes, and together they raised six adoring children. After moving to Columbia, Maryland, Joann earned her pediatric nurse practitioner degree from Johns Hopkins University and became a highly respected and revered pediatric nurse practitioner. Never one to stop learning or creating, she later earned an art degree in Baltimore after the age of 60, leading to the beautiful portraits that now hang in the homes of her family.
Joann approached life with uncommon selflessness, positivity, and quiet strength, setting an example for everyone around her, especially her eleven grandchildren. People naturally gravitated toward her compassion, warmth, and welcoming spirit. Even during life’s most difficult moments, her outlook never changed. She showed all of us, through decades of example, what grace, resilience, faith, and kindness truly look like.
We will miss her terribly, but we are profoundly grateful for the 92 years of love, wisdom, kindness, and beautiful smiles she gave to all of us. Simply put, she lived the kind of life God would have wanted her to live.
Joann was predeceased by her husband, William; and her children Barb, Bob (Deb Levine), and Sharon (Brian Stiff). She is survived by her children Carol (Brian Woods), Bill (Renee), and Jay (Diana); her eleven beloved grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and the many extended family members in Pittsburgh whom she cherished deeply.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley Inc. on Thursday, May 21, 2026 from 5pm
to 8pm. A celebration of Joann’s life will be held on Friday, May 22nd at 10:00am at St. Joseph’s Parish, 100 Church Lane, Cockeysville, Maryland 21030.
