John August Vesper IV, 61, passed away on June 22, 2023 with his loving family by his side. John was born in Baltimore, MD to Kathryn Louise Vesper and the late John August Vesper III. He grew up in Essex, MD and earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Towson University. He and his father created J&J Lawn Service, which provided for his and his sister’s college degrees.
John began his career in insurance with Blue Cross/Blue Shield in DC, where he enjoyed playing evening softball games with co-workers. He then worked for USF&G in downtown Baltimore, where he met his wife, Lee. They married at Christ Lutheran Church Inner Harbor on a snowy day in March,1992. Their first home together was on Vesper Ave, located next to an area where his great-grandfather and grandfather had a family farm. John joined CNA in 1993, first working in the Silver Spring office, then York, PA. They welcomed their first daughter, Caroline into the world before relocating to New Freedom, PA. There, they welcomed their second daughter, Elizabeth and spent their growing-family years in the rural PA community. John’s office later moved to Timonium; his last position with CNA was AVP Umbrella & Excess reporting to the home office in Chicago. As empty nesters, John & Lee recently moved to Bel Air, Maryland, where they planned to retire.
John was well known by his colleagues as trustworthy, warm, humorous, and kind and was relied upon for his expertise, honesty, and deliberation. He was passionate about his career, always proud of and loyal to CNA Insurance, easily adapting to a constantly changing organizational environment. He possessed a deep respect and genuine caring for the people on his team.
John's first love was his daughters, and he theirs. He was their first call for help, the first one to drive them to cheerleading, tennis, dance, softball, and a million other activities. He coached soccer and softball, taught them to drive, ran forgotten lunches to school, took them on countless college visits, and cried at their recitals and graduations. John loved the beach and was a devoted Baltimore sports team fan. He gave generously to his community. He was a wonderful, humorous story-teller, a trait he picked up from his father, and cared deeply about others, remembering to ask after spouses and children by name.
John is survived by his loving wife, Leila Vesper and by his two daughters, Caroline and Elizabeth. He was deeply loved by his mother, Kay; sister, Karen Vesper; and his sisters-in-law, Aileen White and Carol White. He is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews as well as lifelong friends who miss him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the York Symphony Orchestra to support the musicians who provided John and Leila with many evenings of beautiful music.
Visitation with family and friends to gather and share memories will be held 3:00pm to 5:00pm and 6:30pm to 9:00pm on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley. A service led by Pastor John Sabatelli, who married John and Leila, will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, July 7, 2023.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.lemmonfuneralhome.com for the Vesper family.
