Marian Mulvey Hogan

Marian M. Hogan passed away on May 23rd after a brief illness. She was 97 years old and lived at Jacaranda Trace in Venice,Florida for the past nine years. Marian was born in Baltimore, Maryland to her mother, Marian L. Mulvey and her Irish father, M. Bernard Mulvey of Country Waterford, Ireland. Marian was very proud of her Irish heritage and loved that her daughter also became an Irish citizen.

Marian was raised and educated in Baltimore, graduating from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and pursuing a brief career as a teacher before marrying John F. Hogan, Jr., M.D. who predeceases her. She and Dr. Hogan and their infant daughter (also named Marian) spent two years in Japan where Marian learned much about Asian culture including how to make beautiful, kimono clad Japanese dolls.

Marian was a voracious reader, making her a formidable Scrabble player, even playing an international Scrabble champion. Marian was a quick thinker who could deliver a witty remark or kind exchange with equal aplomb. She took pride in writing notes to those who were kind to her. In addition to reading and Scrabble, Marian also enjoyed cooking, swimming, and traveling. Her homemade ‘candied’ sweet potatoes were legendary.

Most of all, Marian loved spending time with family, including her devoted ‘Son-San’, Brian, husband of Marian jr., whom she considered a son. Brian and Marian jr. took Marian Sr. all up and down the East Coast seeing the sights and enjoying great restaurants. Marian was a member of the Gibson Island Club in Maryland for all of her married life, spending many delightful days looking out onto the Chesapeake Bay from the family property.

Marian cherished the special bond she had with her “favorite “ child, Kevin. Marian is survived by her loving daughter, Marian Nash, her son R.Kevin Hogan, and another son, John F. Hogan, III, as well as her sister, Bernadette Johnston, and seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and two other sisters, Aileen and Geraldine.

A celebration of her life will be held on Gibson Island in Maryland later this summer. In lieu of flowers, please read a book or play a game of Scrabble.
