Born in Baltimore, and raised in Forest Park and Roland Park, she was the daughter of Frank Osborne Wilhelm and Ann Elizabeth Dawson Wilhelm.
Jinx was a graduate of the Roland Park Country School and The Maryland Institute College of Art from which she earned her BFA.
She was married to the late Carlyle Barton, Jr for 39 years. They loved to travel, usually with her sister, the late Jane Wilhelm Daniels and her husband, the late Worth Bagley Daniels, Jr., and other close friends.
Jinx served on the board of Pickersgill Retirement Community for fifty years in various roles, including president, before finally retiring in 2021.
Curious and interested in everything, Jinx was a life-long Democrat who cared about politics and social issues. She was a prolific artist able to work in multiple mediums including drawing, painting, and sculpture.
She loved to sew and many of her clothes were her own creations. In fact, she made the wedding dresses of two of her granddaughters. She was a gardener, a garden club member and an amazing flower arranger. In her later years she specialized in miniature flower arrangements for which she won many awards.
An avid and excellent bridge player, she never missed an opportunity to play either in person at the Hamilton Street Club, at her sister’s house, or online.
Jinx’s other love was the opera. She had season tickets to the Metropolitan Opera for many years. When she no longer wished to travel to New York, she was a faithful Saturday afternoon listener to The Met. Her daughters and friends knew not to call her during that time!
Because of her nickname, Jinx, she signed her letters with a small ghost. A consummate hostess, Jinx had a spitfire spirit and tenacity that made her the epitome of the Dylan Thomas poem “Do Not go Gentle into That Good Night”.
Jinx is survived by her three daughters and her stepson: Virginia Lord McKee and her husband Robert, Ann Lord-Brezniak, Charlotte Baker Lord, and William Carlyle Barton and his wife Jane. In addition, she is survived by her nieces, Jane Daniels and Ann Daniels and their families. ‘Jinxie’, as she was known to them, is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for the April 19th.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Pickersgill Retirement Community https://pickersgillretirement.org/ther one!
