Dr. Hamosh was born in Subotica, Yugoslavia, in 1931 to Klara and Leo Hamosh. A Holocaust survivor, he spent the war years in Yugoslavia and immigrated to Israel in 1949, where he served as a paratrooper in the Israeli Army.
While pursuing his medical degree at Hadassah University in Jerusalem, he met his wife, Margit, and they married in 1954. She was the love of his life and the center of his universe until her death in 2011. Together, they immigrated to the US in 1965 for opportunities in science and medicine, she at the NIH and he at the Washington, DC, VA Medical Center.
Dr. Hamosh had a long and fruitful career in pulmonary medicine and physiology at Georgetown University. He authored seminal papers in the field and taught over 5,000 medical students who recognized him with many awards.
A larger-than-life character and devoted father, he is survived by his daughters, Ada Hamosh (Hal Dietz) and Tamar Hamosh Taddei (Christopher Taddei), both of whom followed him into careers in medicine. He is predeceased by his beloved daughter, Leora. He was “Opa” to his cherished grandchildren, Nina Dietz and Livia, Charlotte, and Thomas Taddei.
Dr. Hamosh’s hobbies included travel, swimming, dancing, spectator sports (especially soccer and football), and the fine and performing arts; his favorite was jazz. An amateur astronomer, tech junkie, and historian, no one could beat him at trivia games. He was a scholar, athlete, and renaissance man. Fiercely loyal to his family and profoundly affected by the losses of the Holocaust, he sought distant relatives and made enduring connections to foster a large network of precious relatives and friends. Many spent the pandemic and post-pandemic years reconnecting over regular international zoom meetings.
The family is deeply grateful to the Broadmead Community for their loving care for the past six years.
There will be a zoom memorial on November 19, 2023 at 2 pm EST. If anyone would like to join and doesn't have the link, please contact one of Paul's daughters.
