R. Keith McMillan passed away on March 5, 2023; loving husband of E. Geraldine McMillan for 62 yrs.; devoted father of Rick McMillan and his wife Liana, David McMillan and his wife Lisa; Dear brother of the late Burt McMillan; Cherished grandfather of David, Jr. and his wife Krista, Lizzie, Daniel, and Joseph McMillan and great grandfather of Chloe McMillan.
Second son of two South Dakotans, Keith broke from the family mold by building a career away from the Midwest.
After graduation from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (then University of Omaha), three years in the U. S. Air Force and now married to E. Geraldine (Rice), Keith spent a year as Public Relations Director at Hastings (NE) College, then moved east to become editor of a chemical plant daily newspaper and monthly magazine. Six years and two sons (Rick & David) later, he was promoted to editor of the corporate newspaper of National Distillers and Chemical Corporation in New York.
His next move came four years later, when he moved to Baltimore, MD, to become publications manager at Commercial Credit Company. There he branched out into Human Resources and advanced through several management positions over sixteen years, including a stint in Ohio and a move to Minneapolis. After a year in Chicago, Keith moved to Hartford, CT, with Shawmut Corporation, from which he retired in 1993.
Now empty nesters, Keith and Gerry retired to their lake “resort,” a home they built on inherited property on Lake Kampeska in Watertown, SD. For the next 20 years they lived summers in South Dakota and spent winters house sitting for various homeowners in the Baltimore area. They moved back to Maryland permanently in 2014.
Always active in church, Keith served on committees and boards and sang in the choirs of local congregations of the Presbyterian, Reformed and United Methodist churches, having belonged to Hunt’s United Methodist Church for more than 40 years.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Keith was also an avid golfer and was an accomplished stained glass artist, having produced over 75 pieces ranging from sun catchers to large window panels. He was especially proud of “Pilot Boat Off Cape Henry,” his only commission work made for a Hunt’s Church member.
Keith is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gerry; sons Rick (and Liana) of Dearborn, MI., and David (and Lisa) of Baltimore, four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated in the Hunt's Memorial United Methodist Church, 1912 Old Court Road, Towson, MD 21204 on Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 11:30AM.
