Robert Hall Schuh (Bob) a resident of Baldwin Maryland and formerly of Crofton and was a Fifty Two year member of the Professional Golfers Association of America died Sunday, January 29th.
Bob was born in Chevy Chase Maryland on January 19th, 1934 to Arleene Hall Schuh and Wendell Lewis Schuh. He attended Landon School in Bethesda Maryland, Thayer Academy in Braintree MA and Kimball Union in Meridan NH. He was a member of the Dartmouth class of 1956.
Bob served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. He trained in the elite Nuclear Guidance Systems program at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama and studied under the tutelage of Wernor Von Braun (1912-1977) one of the most important rocket developers and champion of space exploration between the 1930’s and 1970’s. Bob was then stationed in Germany as a member of the United States first guided missile outfits in Europe as part of the NIKE missile program. He was honorably discharged in 1958.
Upon returning to the United States, Bob married Joan A. Zito of Lake Ave in Baltimore City and became a golf professional. Early in his career, Bob was the golf assistant at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis under Bob Williams and then Billy Gilbert at Argyle CC. His career really started to blossom while working for Vic Conti at Chestnut Ridge. In 1964, Bob was hired to help design and to become the first Golf Professional at Crofton Country Club. He and his family settled in Crofton in 1967 where he remained the Head Golf Professional until 1977. While at Crofton, Bob developed a wide range of programs with a particular emphasis on Junior Golf Programs, including founding the South Atlantic Junior Championship which he founded in 1972 and which was one of the premier junior golf tournament in the United States. Under Bobs mentoring and development at least fifteen area Juniors grew to become PGA members as Head Professionals or members of the PGA and LPGA tours.
Bob was a highly active tournament player, having won the New England State Junior Championships as an amateur and later as a professional competing and having much success in both the Mid-Atlantic Sections and later the Philadelphia section of the PGA.
As a member of the Crofton community in its formative years, Bob was very active in the establishment of youth baseball programs and other programs in the young community and was a coach for many years.
Bob left Crofton Country Club in 1977 to take the Head professional job at Lakewood Country Club in Rockville Maryland where he stayed until 1981.
From 1981-1993 Bob leased a young golf course named Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Stewartstown, PA and purchased Pleasant Valley Golf Course in 1994. Shortly after, he oversaw the complete renovation and addition of the clubhouse, now a multi use facility accommodating up to 150 people in a dining room overlooking the golf course. Over the years at Pleasant Valley, as he did at Crofton and Lakewood, Bob built a loyal base of active members and non-members who supported many tournament and events. His loyalty and dedication to Juniors playing golf remained throughout.
In later years, for the members of the MAPGA, Bob formed the Senior Association designed especially for pros who still love to play and compete. He served as its founding President.
In October of 2011, Bob celebrated his 50th year as a member of the PGA, compiling 52 years in all in dedicated service.
Known by all as a man of integrity, Bob was a dedicated husband and Father. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan A. Schuh (nee Joan A. Zito: children Steven R.
