

The son of an attorney and a homemaker, Mr. Stocksdale was born in Baltimore, raised in Hamden, and later resided in the Towson and Timonium areas. As a child, he spent summers on the Chesapeake Bay on the family tobacco farm in Calvert County.
After attending Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Stocksdale attended University of Maryland to complete his undergraduate and law degrees, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Initially a partner in the firm of Stocksdale, Russell and Jarrell, then Stocksdale, Jarrell, Cvach and Simms, in later years he practiced as Robert L. Stocksdale, LLC, with offices in Forest Hill. He was a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Baltimore City Bar Association.
Mr. Stocksdale's legal career began in 1954 with the law offices of Edward Dobihal. He later became an attorney and member of the Board of Directors for Madison Bradford Savings and Loan and Northeastern Bohemian Savings and Loan. An attorney for Bohemian American Federal Savings and Loan Association, Ellwood Permanent Building and Loan, and Columbia Savings and Loan, Mr. Stocksdale was also a settlement attorney for Odenton Federal Savings and Loan Association and Heritage Savings Bank. He was a long time agent of Security Title Guaranty of Baltimore.
From 1955 to 1963 Mr. Stocksdale was the Executive Secretary of the Maryland League of Building, Savings and Loan Associations. He was appointed by Governor Tawes in 1959 as a member of Savings and Loan Commission to draft savings and loan supervision law. He was Past President of Building Association Lawyers of Maryland, a former Director as well as a member for 25 years of the Legislative Committee of Maryland Savings and Loan League.
In 1979, Mr. Stocksdale was appointed to the House Economic Matters Committee to serve on a special committee to rewrite the Savings and Loan Law. Additionally he was a former member of the Attorneys Committee of United States Savings and Loan League.
Mr. Stocksdale was active in service to his country and community. He proudly served a Specialist Second Class in the National Guard from 1954 to 1956, and played trumpet in the National Guard Band.
A past president of the Rodgers Forge and Stoneleigh Community Associations, Mr. Stocksdale was currently the president of the Plumbridge Condominiums in Mays Chapel. Additionally, he served as the 1st Vice-President and Director of Baltimore Junior Association of Commerce. A member of the Board of Trustees of the former Wesley Methodist Home, he was currently an active member of the Mays Chapel United Methodist Church - Stone Chapel.
Mr. Stocksdale was an all-American goalie for the University of Maryland lacrosse team and played and coached for the Maryland Lacrosse Club. He was elected to the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1984.
Mr. Stocksdale enjoyed golf, bridge, bowling and poker with a large group of life long friends. He was a founding member of the Towson Golf and Country Club (Eagle's Nest) and later a member of Country Club of Maryland. He was an avid gardener, collector of trains and coins. He was a fan of the Orioles, Baltimore Colts, Baltimore Ravens and the Maryland Terrapins.
Mr. Stocksdale is survived by his brother Alan Hance Stocksdale, children Betsy Lynne, Robin Lee and Bart Stocksdale and his wife Carol. Mr. Stocksdale delighted in his two grandchildren, Dr. Laura Stocksdale and Brian Stocksdale. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins. He proudly added two stepchildren to his family in 2003, Lee Inman Armstrong and her husband Robert, and Robert Inman and his wife Jane as well as many step-grandchildren.
Mr. Stocksdale is predeceased by his parents Howard and Margaret Stocksdale and sister Lomax Lusby and by his loving wife of 34 years, Coralie Brittingham Stocksdale who died in 1984. He was delighted to find love again with Mary Inman Stocksdale who he married in 2003 and whose death he mourned in 2013.
Mr. Stocksdale was a very humble and modest man. Colleagues and friends remember him as one who went out of his way to advocate for clients who were seeking mortgages, settlements and refinancing, and who was always ready to help family and friends in need. He was admired for his kind and gentle personality and impeccable ethics.
The family will receive friends in the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road (at York Road) Timonium, MD 21093 on Friday, July 19 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9PM.
A memorial service will be celebrated in the Timonium United Methodist Church, 2300 Pot Spring Road, Timonium, MD 21093 on Saturday, July 20 at 10AM.
Interment Druid Ridge Cemetery following the reception.
