Frank D. Mulligan, 83, of Toms River, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2016. Born in Jersey City, NJ. Frank served 22 years with distinction in the US Army Special Forces (Green Beret), retiring in 1975, the rank of Master Sergeant. Frank served with the 1st and 10th Special Forces Groups, 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and the 8th Infantry Division. His active service included tours in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Valor Device, Army Commendation Medal with Valor Device & three Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Good Conduct (five awards), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal with "60" Device, Vietnam Civic Action Honor Medal First Class, Vietnam Jump Wings, Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge. In 1972, at the age of 39, Frank trained and swam the English Channel from Dover, England to Cape Gris Nez, France. During his first tour in Germany, Frank met his future bride, Elfriede Membarth. They lived a long and happy life together celebrating 56 years of marriage.Frank is survived by his wife Elfriede Mulligan, two daughters: Marion White, Sagamore Beach, MA and Sandra D'Alessio and her husband John, Toms River, NJ. Six grandchildren: Jessica, Robin, Heather, Brittany, John and Brooke. Five great-grandsons: Dennis, Devin, Cameron, Connor and Jack.Frank was a member of St. Luke's RC Church, Toms River, NJ; Central Jersey Chapter 82nd Airborne Division Association; Chapter 20; DAV, VFW Post 6063; The Military Order of the Purple Heart, Services to be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington VA.
