He is preceded in death by his loving mother, Marie Orthen Aston, his father, John Henry Aston, Sr., and many cherished friends. John was the beloved husband of Katherine (Jaquier) for 55 years, and loving father to Kathleen Fritschy (son-in-law, Ray), Debbie Aston, and John Aston, Jr. He was a proud Pop-Pop to two loving granddaughters, whom he adored, Jennifer Fritschy and Shea Olcheski. He loved all of our family’s pets namely Riley, who never left his side during his last days.
John was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, but he always had a love of the Jersey Shore. He spent many summers in Brick and Point Pleasant as a young man boating, fishing, and swimming. He was also a proud U.S. Air Force veteran and spoke often of his time in the military. To him, it was an adventure of a lifetime.
He was a carpenter for the Jersey City Board of Education. After retiring, he moved to Bayville, NJ in 2001, living out his dream of owning a home on the water, with a boat parked at the dock in his backyard. He was Captain Jack and the “salt of the earth”. He loved his family, friends, Johnny Cash, dogs, fishing, watching Cramer’s Mad Money recap and negotiating great deals at local garage sales. He was a kind and generous man with a great sense of humor. His blue eyes and smile could light up a room.
Relatives and friends will be received on Thursday, August 31st from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main Street, Toms River, NJ. A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at Saint Barnabas Roman Catholic Church in Bayville, NJ. A grave side ceremony to follow will be held at St Joseph’s Church cemetery in Keyport, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in John's name to the American Cancer Society or the Mesothelioma Cancer Foundation.
