

AGE: 86 TOMS RIVER
John A. Murphy, 86, of Toms River, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at home, surrounded by his loving family. A native of the West Brighton neighborhood of Staten Island, N.Y., he lived in Middletown before moving to Toms River in 2006. John was a graduate of Curtis High School in Staten Island and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II as a machinist's mate second class. He retired after 28 years as a stationary engineer for Proctor and Gamble at the Port Ivory Plant in Staten Island, N.Y. John was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Toms River. He enjoyed fishing, reading, and watching the N.Y. Yankees. John was known for his beautiful Irish tenor singing voice. He was loved by many and will be sadly missed.
He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Ethel L. Murphy, in 1987; and his brother, Denis J. Murphy. Surviving are his beloved daughters, Joan C. Kurtis and her husband Raymond D., Elizabeth A. Curley and her husband Gregory D., and Patricia M. Pasieka and her husband Peter F.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen McCauley and Evelyn O'Neill; two sisters-in-law, Joan Robson and Joyce Lyle; and a dear friend, Marion Cook.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31 at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St., Toms River. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1 at St. Joseph's Church, 685 Hooper Ave., Toms River. Burial will follow at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown. Donations may be made to Van Dyke Hospice at Community Medical Center, 99 Route 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755.
