Jack O’Leary, 79, of Pine Beach, passed into eternal life surrounded by the love of his family, and the lasting admiration of the many students and athletes whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career. Jack fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s with faith, courage and grit, the hallmarks of his years in the classroom and on the track. Even in his final years, the mention of a name could bring a smile to his face and joy in remembering, in his own way, a young man or woman who had fulfilled a personal goal or propelled a team to victory. They all enriched his life beyond words.
Jack attended Essex Catholic High School where he distinguished himself as a member of the track team and as an inductee into the National Honor Society. He helped to set a national record in the 2 mile relay, and as a senior in 1964, set a new NJ record of 4:16.3 in the mile. He continued his athletic and academic career at Villanova University on a full scholarship, where he ran under the famed coach, Jim “Jumbo” Elliott. His memories of Villanova were a source of pride and gratitude for the lifelong friendships it produced.
Following graduation, Jack dedicated his life to education and coaching. His early years at Roselle Catholic and his alma mater Essex Catholic, were filled with many championship teams and memories of the athletes and students he mentored. He then spent 27 years at Morris Hills High School in Rockaway, NJ, mentoring students and young teachers, and built highly successful track and field programs. His leadership, discipline and passion for the sport shaped generations of athletes and fostered a culture of excellence and sportsmanship. After retirement, Jack continued to teach and coach at Donovan Catholic High School in Toms River, NJ, where he again built a championship-caliber track and field program.
Finally, Jack retired from teaching and coaching, and enjoyed the benefits of life at the Jersey Shore. He and his wife, Peggy, travelled, played golf, sailed and spent time with their beloved grandchildren. After years of volunteering at the Pine Beach Yacht Club, teaching his own sons to sail, he had the thrill of watching his four grandchildren all sail for PBYC as well. Even more dear to his heart is the fact that all four grandchildren have followed in their PopPop’s legacy with track and field careers of their own.
Always quick with a story, Jack entertained family and friends with funny accounts and warm recollections of life in the classroom and on the track. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Peggy; two sons: John (Valerie) of Cream Ridge, and Tim (Sarah) of Pine Beach; four grandchildren: Jack and Elizabeth (Tim), and John and Harper (John); sisters: Kathy and Beth; brothers: Mark, Tom, Richard and Robert; and many, many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering for Jack will be held at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River on Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 1-4 pm. A private family mass will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to either the Alzheimer’s Association or the Pine Beach Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program.
