“Coach Gelb” dedicated his life to teaching, coaching and music. He was full of passion and positivity making a difference in countless lives over the years at Lakewood High School where he was a special education teacher and an assistant basketball coach. After retiring, he continued to use his gift of teaching as a tutor for the Literacy Volunteers. When he wasn’t teaching or on the basketball court, Richard was writing and performing music. He enjoyed writing the music for the Ocean County College summer children’s shows, performing his original music on the piano at the Jersey Shore, and fronting his rock and roll band, The Pet Clams on the stage in New York City. Above all, he loved being at home doing the NYT crossword every day in record time and being with his wife, family and friends. His family finds comfort knowing that his memory will live on in the Lakewood High School Hall of Fame, in the recordings of his music, and in the hearts of all who knew him.
