I knew Bob from high school in Aviano and Vicenza, Italy. Always a fun and funny person. Great memories. My deepest condolences to the family. He will be greatly missed.

I knew Bob from High School in Vicenza Italy. He was a good guy and I am very upset to hear of his passing. 

He will be sorely missed.

Bobby was a friend and a great basketball player. When we were in Aviano, we played against each other and as teammates. I am so sorry in hearing of his passing, wonderful person.

Sad to hear of Bob's passing. My condolences to Dorothy and family.  I remember Bob well from Italy as a fun person to hang with, and intense sportsman for both Aviano and Vicenza teams.

“Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped into the next room ... whatever we were to each other that we still are.”  is an excerpt from a poem I read a long time ago, which seems like something Bob would say to us now … 

“DEATH IS NOTHING AT ALL”

Bob will always be my fellow soccer dad. We both spent what seems like a lifetime on the soccer fields watching my daughter and his talented daughter Casey play soccer. By shouting out instructions to his daughter he helped me learn the game.  I also enjoyed coaching with him when both our daughter played rec softball. He was the the "cool" coach who basically taught the girls to have fun first and learn the game second. My condolences to Casey, Cathy and the rest of the Pelican family

Upon hearing my Cousin Bobby Pelican had passed away, no words could express my heart felt sadness for their loss to My Aunt Dot, his brother Kenny and sisters Kathy and Teri Jo.

This is sad news indeed.  Bob, was a well liked, long term member of the Kenilworth Chess Club and the chess community at large.

We were all aware he was fighting cancer intensively over the last few years.  Nonetheless, such was his determination to beat cancer, he insisted that I hold his board seat for him for the 2020 World Team Championship tourney in mid February.  His will was such that he had every intention of becoming well enough to compete again.

Throughout all his life’s tribulations, his love for chess provided a steady rail to help steer him through life’s many bumps and nuances.

Bob, more than most of us, loved good food, cooking, entertaining and laughter.  We were all aware that in addition to his long love affair with chess competitions, he also loved automobiles and two and four cycle motorcycles, a hobbyist love that was instilled in him by his father.

I had come to know Bob through common chess friends and our becoming chess teammates at the annual USATE tourney about four years ago.  It turned out we both had fathers with deep US Air Force roots, had some common business friends, chess friends and similar interests.   It wasn’t long before we became confidants and close friends.

There were good reasons why Bob was well liked by many.  He always comported himself like a gentleman.  I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, and yet, like his close buds, Andy and Scott, he also had a big and generous personality.   Speaking of generous, I had enjoyed more self prepared meals with Bob at our various chess tourney hotels’ kitchens than with anybody. As any of his friends will attest, he was great company, full of life and laughter.   And, his friends were inexorably friends for life.

That his passing is this personally impactive, I can’t imagine the degree of loss, his incalculable decades long friends Andy Wolman and Scott Massey, his fiancée Cammy, his siblings and children must feel.

Bob was a teammate of mine on Chessaholics in 2017 and 2019.  He was a very nice man and a tenacious player. We will miss him greatly
