Stephen was born in Jersey City and was a resident of Union City, graduating from Union Hill High School. As an adolescent, Steve was affectionately known in the schoolyard as “Itchy”. He served as a mentor and supportive figure within the community as an Assistant Coach alongside his father, Clayton Morrell Sr., for St. Augustine’s CYO. Later on coaching Union City and North Hudson County Biddy Basketball Teams where they won multiple NJ State Championships along with a National Championship. Stephen then became the head coach at St. Joseph’s High School, West New York, NJ. He will be forever remembered within the community for the dedication and mentorship he provided throughout these years. Stephen worked as a loan officer for the majority of his career.
Stephen was a loving husband, father, brother, son, and grandfather. Steve enjoyed traveling with his wife, Angie, including trips to Vegas. He cherished his time with his granddaughters, better known as “Papa’s girls or Papa’s princesses” and his grandsons. Stephen’s caring personality extended to all, including his pets and the wildlife of Manalapan. In his retirement, Steve enjoyed feeding deer outside his home, so much so that they would wait at his garage for his arrival. Stephen was an avid Yankees and Cowboys fan spending his free time coaching them from his couch or the games he would attend with his son.
Stephen is predeceased by his father, Clayton Morrell Sr.. He is survived by his wife, Angie Langevin; his children; Stephen Morrell (Carly) and Lauren Ryan (William); grandchildren Colette, Gabriella, Mason, and Luca which he shared with Lisa Morrell; mother, Florence Morrell; and siblings Thomas Morrell (Nora), Clayton Morrell (Lourdes), Kenneth Morrell (Margaret), Nadine Morrell, Dina Morrell, and Meredith Morrell as well as many nieces and nephews.
A visitation for Stephen will be held Monday, May 6, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A mass will occur Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 9:00 AM at St. Luke's Church, Old Freehold Road, Toms River, NJ. Entombment will follow at Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Rd, Toms River, New Jersey 08753
