Even though a year later I just came to know of Al's passing. I am shocked with infinite sadness. My condolences to Laurie and Al's family.
We worked together for many years, Al was my best friend during those years. Al was most generous and most sincere person who cared for his friends and everyone deeply, he was always there to help and make you laugh. He will be immensely missed. May you rest in eternal peace. You will forever be remembered with fondness for the greatest person you were.

Well my honey, yesterday we finally laid you to rest at Pine Hills Cemetery, together with your mom, dad and sister, Margaret.  Still, I miss you so much, Samantha J misses you, but at least now we know that you are finally 'Resting in Peace'.  Lindsay & Ryan were there, as were your sisters Linda and Suzy, Carol, Geoff, Uncle Skip, Jay & Brenda, Val & Matthew, Pauline, Ray & Sean. I've spent many days trying to find the right words to express my condolences for your loss.  But words do not come easy.

Few people have had the depth of impact on my life as Al has.  I will always remember the many good times we shared together - from our golf trips and vacations to our late nights of playing cards and singing "the classics".

Laurie, Ryan, Lindsay and the rest of the family, take comfort in the fact that there are many more people who's lives Al has touched as he has mine.

Many people come in and out of our lives but only certain people make a lifelong impression. Al was one of those special people you remember forever. I am so sorry for your lose.  It was a pleasure to have met you and to know that Al had a good and happy life for the past 7 years.  You made a difference in his life.  Thank you for taking the time to help comfort Ryan and Lindsay.  This is very hard for them as I know it is for you.  It showed me how very warm a person you are.  I wish we all could have met under different circumstances.

‘My Honey’, I thought we would have many more years together, grow old together but I guess that just wasn’t in God’s plans.  The very last words you spoke to me when I said we needed you well and out of the hospital were “it’s in God’s hands”, and I guess you knew better than I.

I’m really not sure how I am going to go on without you.  We only had 7 years together but it was a ‘lifetime’ of many wonderful memories.  We had our share of struggles but there was never any question of our love for one another.  We laughed (you always made me laugh), we cried (I loved that you cried at sad movies) and sometimes we were even a little miffed at one another, but everything we did we did together or, with the other in mind.

I remember when you said how proud you were of me when I got up to speak at Karl’s Christmas party.   You didn’t know how I could speak in front of so many people and that you could never do that.  You didn’t know how really terrified I was and, I could never understand how you couldn’t speak – you always had so much to say and to so many people.  

You were not a person who was about ‘possessions or things’ – you always said “if you can touch it, you can’t feel it”.  I will always remember you as a very kind and generous person to those less fortunate.  You never hesitated to give your last dollar to someone in need.  And your sincere devotion to “children in sports” always left you more than a few dollars short whenever they were doing a fundraiser.  

You had a ‘naughty’ sense of humor (with more than a few choice words added in for effect – you loved to get a reaction out of people), and which not everyone always understood, but you always made those who knew you laugh and feel good. 

You loved your sports and I think a little piece of you was lost when you could no longer play as you used to.  I remember your beautiful voice which you were too shy to share with people, but I also remember the first song you sang to me…our song…’Open Arms’ by Journey and your rendition of the ‘Superman’ song.

When you started your job with Canada Post it was ‘culture shock’ for you working in a ‘union’ environment.  You had worked so many years in Corporate downtown Toronto.  But you somehow found your way and in the end, were so blessed to have made so many wonderful friends. 

My Honey, it is time for us to let you go to be the person you were meant to be for Eternity.  Even with all of the pain you were feeling in recent months you always said to me “don’t worry about me, I’m fine”.  I do know that you are fine now and no longer in pain and take some comfort in that.  I also know that you will forever be looking out for me and Samantha ‘J’ and that we will love you always and forever hold you close in our hearts.

Al will be greatly missed by his B.C.'family'. His humour and pleasant personality will be remembered fondly. Even when Al was enduring much pain and discomfort he continued to laugh and joke. He will remain in our hearts

Al, thanks for making us feel so welcome at the apartment building. We were just two young kids moving to the city from the country and without kind souls like you it wouldn't have been as nice. It was a pleasure meeting you. 

We will miss seeing you and Samantha around the building greatly.

Dear Laurie,
Please accept my deepest sympathies. My prayers are with you and his family, to accept this great loss.  Will always remember Al's smile.

Laurie, it was a pleasure to meet you at the hospital on the Saturday that I visited Al.  I thank you for your thoughfulness in letting me have a visit with him while you walked the dog. 

Through all his troubles, he looked strong and his sense of humour was still intact. We talked about work, as usual, and we had a good laugh about everyone in the world seeing his private parts.

I was looking forward to having Al back at work, as we all were.  He made an indelible impression on everyone in the station, including me.  Al told me to stand up for myself no matter what, words that I will live by. 

My last words to Al were, "I love you, Al, come back soon".  Not knowing that this would be the last time that I would see or speak with him, I feel happy in my heart that my last words to Al conveyed the way I felt about him.

My sincere condolences to you and Al's family at his sudden passing. I will remember him always for his sense of humour and as a person that I looked up to.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.  May your memories bring you comfort.
