Anne was the first of four girls born in Ottawa to Lewis and Mary Bateman. She grew up with her sisters Margaret, Barbara and Elizabeth, moving frequently between Air Force bases in Ottawa, Montreal, North Bay and Dayton, Ohio. She received her RN from St. Mary's Hospital in Montreal and practiced nursing for 41 years. The majority of her career was spent at the Addiction Research Foundation (now CAMH), where she served as Chief Steward of the OPSEU bargaining unit and was proud to have been on the first staff team of the groundbreaking Toronto Drug Treatment Court.
While working at the Addiction Research Foundation, Anne met her husband John Martyn. In 1978 they had their first daughter, Amanda, followed in 1984 by Emily. The key focus of Anne's life was her family and she was loved as a thoughtful, attentive daughter, sister and aunt, but the core of her happiness was building a home with John, Emily, Amanda, and her doted-on grandson Jay.
Anne was an avid reader of mystery novels and loved other mind-sharpening pursuits including trivia and crossword puzzles. Yoga was a passion of hers for decades and gardening was another quiet pleasure. She was an expert at choosing the right word to say in a time of sadness, the right gift in a time of happiness, and the right dry one-liner to sum up the situation at any time.
If you're visiting this site, you already know that Anne was a considerate, trustworthy person who saw humour in the peculiarities of daily life. No service will be held at this time but please leave your personal thoughts and memories here. A celebration of Anne's life will take place this summer and details will be added to this site when they become available.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Scott Mission, a community organization that Anne supported for many years, or to the New Leaf Yoga Foundation, which offers access to yoga classes for youth in under-served communities.
