

Peacefully at M.t Sinai Hospital, Toronto on Sunday, June 5, 2016 after prolonged illnesses. Fr. Charlie was born in Rochester, N.Y. on January 6, 1929. He was predeceased by his parents Angelo and Louise Masnaghetti and his brothers Edmund, Donald, Arthur, Robert and Fr.Walter, CSB. He is survived by many nieces and nephews. Months after graduating from Aquinas Institute in 1946 he entered the Basilian Novitiate. He was professed in 1947, educated at the U of St. Michaels College and St. Basil’s Seminary in Toronto and ordained June 29, 1955. He then pursued graduate studies in French at Lyon and Paris, France. In 1959 he taught for a year at Aquinas Institute, Rochester and in 1960 for seven years in Annonay, France followed by graduate studies there. Fr. Charlie then taught at the U of St. Michael’s College from 1972 to 1994. In 1978 he was awarded a Doctorate (D. de l’U) at the U of Paris – Sorbonne based on the Relations of the first Jesuits in North America. In 1994 he retired at USMC until he was assigned in 2011 to Anglin House, formerly called the Basilian Infirmary. In 2012 he moved to assisted living at the Terraces of Baycrest, also in Toronto, until his death. There will be a Memorial Mass in the Chapel of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto on Wednesday, June 8 at 10 AM. The Funeral Mass for Fr. Charles Principe will take place at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish at Christ the King, 445 Kings Hwy. South, Rochester, NY on Saturday, June 11 at 9:30 AM followed by burial at the Basilian plot in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery beside his brother, Fr.Walter.
