Born June 30, 1928, she was the beloved eldest daughter of Mary and William Polley (Palenchuk), late of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She is mourned by her son Willliam Matthews of Lillooet, B.C. and by her sisters, Adeline McIntosh and Victoria Richards of Toronto, Ontario, Evelyn Copeland of Lincoln, Nebraska and Rosemarie Cuddy of Half Moon Bay, British Columbia.
She will be missed by her many cousins, nieces and nephews, and by her grand-nieces and grand-nephews and by the many friends she made during her long and active life.
Doreen was unfailingly poised and elegant, qualities which served her well in her employment with Air Canada as a member of the ground crew in the exclusive Maple Leaf Lounge. She loved to travel all her life.
After her retirement, she was a member and/or an officer of many organizations, including the University Women’s Club, the Dickens Fellowship and the St. George’s Society.
She was intelligent and determined. She earned a certificate in Women’s Studies from the school of continuing studies at York University in 1994 and an Honours B.A. in 1998 at the age of 70. She was a supporter of the York University Alumni Association.
She was fiercely independent. She lived alone in her own home until her most recent hospitalization a few weeks after her 93rd birthday.
Cremation has taken place. At her request, no service will be held. If desired, a contribution may be made to one of the organizations Doreen supported or to a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be shared at www.jerrettfuneralhome.ca.
