This was September 2019, with our coworkers. 



Yesterday (June 22nd), I learned about your passing. For a year and a half, i didn't know that you're gone and this is utterly heartbreaking. 

4 years ago I met you, you trained me patiently and I am relieved because you're so forbearing.  
We weren't that close and our time together was very short, but I will definitely remember you as a caring and lighthearted young man.

You are missed.

I only had the chance to meet Ewan once and it was my honour. Ewan volunteered with NWRCT, he was helpful, kind, and truly connected with everyone. He held a grace and energy to him that was kind and inviting. I am lucky to have shared space with him and shared a very kind and fun chat. 

 Love and prayers to all who love and miss him. Warmth and support from everyone at NWRCT.

I remember being fast asleep after another boring school day. I remember my lights being abruptly turned on and awoken by a humanoid figure at my doorway. I was awoken to a familiar face. It was Ewan. After that, we decided to go for a casual walk in the neighborhood and catch up on what we were doing with our lives. This happened twice, but it was meaningful. It was meaningful because in spite of the fact that we'd go months, let alone even years of not speaking to one another, there was still that casual sense of friendship that we had with one another. How he could stumble into my home as if he were family - which he was. I liked it. I liked it a lot. Sleepovers and the CNE were fun with you. I'll miss you forever. I love you, Ewan. 

I spent only one week with Ewan, during which he assisted his father Michael at a retreat I was attending. I was so impressed by him as he was so kind, caring, and mature well beyond his years.  He was so cheerful and helpful; just an all around bright light. I know that light will never go out. My deepest sincere condolences to his family and all who were close to him. ♥️ Ena Konjolka  

I have been working closely with Ewan’s Father for over 4 years now.  I got to know Ewan in the context of the work that we do. 

I remember being in Gabon, Africa with Ewan- and getting to know him during the two weeks we spent there together. 

My memory of Ewan is as a good-hearted, intelligent, intuitive young man and an old soul.  
He got along with everyone and was loved and embraced by the men, women, children and elders of the Village where we were staying (a village of healers, shamen, warriors, musicians)  

After Ewan’s passing I received messages from the people of the Village expressing that they are also mourning for this loss and honouring him.  

The way Ewan so naturally and intuitively grasped and embodied the tradition taught to us by the Missoko Bwiti people - was rare.  
For example : The dances taught to the men are complex and difficult to pick up.  Ewan is the only non-Gabonese man I witnessed who was able to do the Bwiti dances flawlessly. 
The way Ewan embodied this healing tradition, and was loved and embraced by the Village, led us to believe that he would continue to  grow, live and work with us over the long-term- along with the sons of the lead Shaman, who were around his age and like brothers. 

Ewan sometimes attended and helped at the retreats his Dad facilitates.  Everyone loved  his presence and  loved working with him. He not only showed an aptitude for the healing and counselling work we do - he showed an excellent business, organizational, and management mind.  

Based on the aptitude he showed, everyone working on the team between Canada, Mexico and Gabon- hoped that Ewan would eventually come work with us in some capacity- after finishing school. 

 The whole team - local and international- is feeling this loss.

Ewan will always be honoured with love in our minds and in our hearts and through the work that we do, around the world. 

I was privileged to be Ewan’s teacher at Ursula Franklin Academy. Ewan brought warmth, kindness and sincerity to any and every environment. I will forever treasure the memories of conversations and laughs. My deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. 

I have many memories as a kid hanging out with Ewan.  Having sleepovers as a kid. Going to the exhibition together with my family on year. 

I saw him walking down Broadview just this August with a big smile on his face and when I waved it just grew brighter. 

I will always remember you with that smile Ewan. 

I’ll remember you forever Ewan. Rest well. 

We've known Ewan since junior kindergarten. He used to come for sleepovers. He was the outspoken, charming kid who loved a good time and had well informed opinions  even as a child. One thing I always admired about him was how cheerful he always seemed. 
Ewan lived in the moment, that's for sure. He'll always be part of our family. ❤

I was Ewan's vice principal while he attended Ursula Franklin Academy.  Ewan was a kind and gentle person who always took a genuine interest in what others had to say.  We had many conversations over the years and I always appreciated his point of view and his passion in his beliefs.  My deepest sympathies go out to the Cassidy family.

I taught Ewan in grade 9 at UFA and remember his light, his warmth, and his energy.  In later years he always had a smile in the hallway or would come by to chat. When he was in grade 11 he and I co-taught a Wednesday session on spoken Japanese and he delighted in sharing that side of himself with his fellow students (as well as correcting my inferior Japanese!)
After graduation he was a student who would come back to visit and he loved sharing book recommendations as he continued to pursue his interests and self-development. It was always a pleasure to see him and talk with him and I feel the world is truly diminished by his absence. I will always remember him with fondness. 
Please allow me to express my most heartfelt condolences to Ewan’s family and loved ones. 


My heart goes out to Ewan’s family at this unimaginable time.  Ewan was one of my students at Ursula Franklin Academy.  He in fact was one of my favourite students. Ewan was bright, funny, engaged, aware and considerate of others, kind, and vulnerable. When in need her always made his way down to the office where he would talk things out with Barbara (our vice principal) or myself.  Despite being overwhelmed at times, with all things “teenager” he always managed an impish smile and made us laugh.  Ewan was a soul that made a difference to those he knew and I for one am all the richer in ways too numerous to count having worked with him at the school. The week leading up to his passing I came across a carved wooden turtle that Ewan had given me as a gift. I clasped it tightly and sent good thoughts his way that day.  I will hold this incredible young man in my heart and thoughts going forward as well. I will draw on those characteristics of his that made a difference to me and the so many lives he touched in his short time here on earth to keep his spirit alive.  I am hopeful that peace is upon you now Ewan.  Sincere and deepest condolences to the Cassidy family.

Ewan and our son, Theo, may never have been besties, but they were pretty good pals back in the senior pubic and middle school years. We don’t have a lot of memories of Ewan, but the ones we have are with fondness and affection: he was a rich, positive presence when the boys hung out at our place. We’re all so fragile — it just hurts, and our hearts go out to all Ewan's loved ones.

Ewan was kind to everyone and had a warm smile.  My children were happy to spend time with him when he came to visit our home in Japan.  He used to carry my son who was one year old at the time. When he was around, everyone felt his kindness.  Ewan was a person who cared  more about someone else's  happiness than his own.  I am proud to to say he is my nephew. 

I only knew Ewan for a short time when we were small kids, but his rare kindness is impossible to forget. He possessed so much warmth and compassion even at five years old, and he was the first person to befriend and look out for me when I was new at his daycare. It’s obvious that his wonderful spirit only grew over time and he was adored by so many. He had such a great effect on this world. I am so deeply sorry to everyone who loved him.

I never taught Ewan at UFA, but I feel like I knew him nonetheless. He was the type of kid who would just drop by to talk, and he did so on many occasions. He was thoughtful and inquisitive and so incredibly kind hearted. Ewan wanted love in this world and tried to foster it in those around him. He definitely made his mark on our school. He will be greatly missed.

I will remember Ewan's bright energy, his old soul, and his ability to remain child-like and curious. He cared deeply for everyone he met and was a genuine advocate and ally for the underserved in his community. Ewan frequented our business regularly... he was not just a customer, he became a dear friend. We will miss the ray of sunshine he brought with him anytime he opened the door to our shop. We will miss his infectious smile. We will miss him dancing in the middle of the store to whatever playlist we had on that day. The world has lost a bright light and a rare soul. 

My heart breaks for Ewan's family and loved ones. May he rest easy. 


Ewan was such a sweet and gentle soul.  He was so kind and considerate of his peers and teachers, he genuinely cared for others and their well-being.  He would always acknowledge you and say hello in the halls, making you feel seen.  This validation and respect for others truly enriched the UFA community.   I remember fondly his passion for music.  He was a vibrant member of our music sharing Wednesday session.  He recognized how vulnerable it can be to share something deeply personal with a group and always found something positive and thoughtful to say about his classmates’ song selections.  I appreciated his sensitive nature and enthusiasm.  My heart is broken for his family and the many who loved him.  

Ewan made every space he was in warmer, better. When he spoke to you, he spoke looking you in the eye, with his full attention and care. It was a privilege to learn from him while he was a student at Ursula Franklin Academy. He was such a great kid. Sending all of my love to his family. 

First I would like to express my sincere condolences to  Ewan's family. He was a wonderful student that brought a beam of light and joy into any classroom he was in. I recall his helpful nature, his willingness to try, and his empathy towards his peers. He really strived to always put his best foot forward. Ewan openly shared his experiences from his travels and  wisdom with his classmates enriching the context of class discussions. 

Ewan you remain  in the hearts and minds of UFA staff and your fellow students.

My heart is so broken for Ewan's family. Ewan was a genius, a brilliant writer, a kind and generous soul. There was a gentleness in his brilliance. He listened deeply. He was warm, interested, seeking. Being around him, working with him was such an absolute privilege. He is the brightest light, and the world is so much poorer without him. 

He challenged everyone around him to do better, to be better. And he changed the world around him every day. I cherish my memories of Ewan so deeply. I am so profoundly sorry for this devastating loss. 

I miss you, Ewan. It was an honour to work alongside you. You are so loved and you will never be forgotten. <3

I remember Ewan from UFA.  He was always enthusiastic and positive.  A great guy all round.  Very sorry to hear of his premature passing.
