Ovey taught me in the late 1990's. His World Religion Classes were eye openers for me. He taught with wit and charm. We both smoked at the time, so standing outside over months,  we came to know each other. When we met later on, he remembered and enquired about my family,  It always touched me that he remembered. In  our last conversation shortly before the covid lockdown, he adjured me that I did not meditate long enough and drew a book by a Buddhist writer from his shelf. 
He was a rare person.

I wish to express my most sincere gratitude for the person and teaching of Professor Ovey Mohammed.  As director for my doctoral thesis, he was the ideal advisor to guide my interest in inter-religious, inter-faith dialogue.  He brought me through the tough times. He combined careful, demanding scholarship with a warm, inclusive attitude and energy.  I could ask for no greater blessing in my own life than to share something of his serious and open spirit.  Many of us have been influenced for the good of whole human community by Ovey.

Ovey Mohammed taught me theology at Regis College in the early 1990’s as part of my M. Div. at Wycliffe.
I learned a lot about respecting faith journeys other than my own and it had a transformative impact on my faith journey. He also took a personal interest in me and my faith development which was very affirming.
Ovey also gladly accepted my in invitation to speak at our educational rounds at Scarborough Grace Hospital a couple of years after I graduated and his intellect and gracious presence engendered both an emotional and an active positive response to his understanding of, and commitment to including  multifaith spiritual care for the diversity of religious traditions in our hospital population.
It was a privilege to be tutored by him and to be considered a friend of this beautiful man who helped make a progressive Christianity a healing journey for me,

Ovey was a good friend, a mentor and a confidante.  We worked together at Regis College, he as a Professor and I as Registrar.  I knew him to be a great professor who challenged his students to read and learn, to be reflective; to examine their own responses to the information and to make an authentic assessment.   He was also Dean for a year and I couldn’t have asked for better support and encouragement in our work together.

His droll sense of humour and his keen insight into others made him a joy to be with, and when he focussed his penetrating gaze on you and asked you a question in that gravelly voice of his, you never dissembled.  He was a just man and an honourable one.

I will miss him greatly.  I send condolences to his extended family, especially his niece and nephew of whom he was particularly fond.

Would you believe I only "met" this reverend Trinbagonian two weeks ago? My lecturer in Ecclesiology (Dexter Brereton CSSp), likely certain that his eager choice to draw reference to his own former lecturer's insights for Muslim-Catholic dialogue would be an introduction to the man for the lot of us, must have been led by the Holy Spirit to do so. So, too, with januatic trust in God for this Ignatian son – whose work He inspired and whose rest He might be – I pray for Fr Mohammed's family and flock (community, fellows, students and alumni) to receive this humble expression of my sincerest condolences.

Deepest condolences to the entire family, including the Hordatts. We had the privilege to have met Fr Mohammed on a few family occasions, and were impressed with his gentility and respect. Blessings and prayers.
