On October 17, 2024, Helga left us peacefully, at Sunnybrook Hospital surrounded by love. She was 89 years young.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, a spirited Helga left home at nineteen and never looked back. After a stint in Sweden, she, along with her sister Lisa made Canada their new home. Canada brought many adventures to Lisa and Helga – careers, marriages, cottaging, skiing, travel, lots of laughter and, sadly, widowhood. They spent the years until Lisa’s passing attending concerts, dining out, enjoying Christmases in Quebec City, travelling and living life to the fullest– which Helga continued to do until just a few short weeks before her passing. Helga always had a kind word (or three) and sage advice for everyone – her friends, family, acquaintances, shopkeepers, wait staff, service providers- even strangers on the street who happen to catch her eye.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Ernie, her parents and her sisters Lisa and Waltraut. Survived by her nephew Thomas in Germany, and his family, Ernie’s nieces and nephews and their families and special friends the Rapson and the Schulze/Stiefeling families.
In accordance with Helga’s wishes, there will be no funeral or celebration of life. But she would be absolutely delighted if you raised a glass in memory of her.
Farewell, dear Helga. The Danforth won’t be the same without you.
