Sr. Herman was my grade 6 teacher at St Pius X in Toronto, the year my father died. Now, in my 60th year, I still remember her compassion and support that extended even to my family in that difficult time. I remember her exuberant energy teaching awkward sixth graders the modern hymns of the then “radical” folk masses, and her no nonsense kindness, handing over her own sandwich to a pupil distraught over forgetting lunch. My awe over Sr. Herman’s extraordinary memory and impeccable handwriting grew with each Christmas or birthday card from her filled with updates on latest activities and even news of other students I might know. My own 3 children and my husband have also had the privilege and pleasure of meeting this amazing human being that has been such a blessing in my life.
Sr. Herman, I am so grateful for the love and prayers you have so generously given me throughout my life. Thank you for your example, your strength, your faith, your laughter, and your sparkling eyes. You have made the world a better and happier place. I am honoured to have you in my life; you are forever in my heart.

Condolences and prayers to the Sheiferling Family and all the sisters of the IBVM  (Loretto) community who knew her.

Sister Herman was the Principal, my 7th grade and last teacher I had before the closing of Loretto Academy, Hamilton elementary school in 1968. She was a patient teacher, firm but fair, kind, caring and so much fun.

My fondest memories were of playing sports she helped to coach or just having fun on the grounds, volleyball, dodgeball, crochet, baseball, even skipping double Dutch and skating. I felt that she truly enjoyed her time with us and we with her.  
If you didn't know this before, or experience it first hand, Sister Herman was a "vision" and a "force" on the baseball diamond. Folding her vail in three and  piled on her head, her calf length rosary beads looped around her neck and her habit skirt she hoisted just high enough to expose her baseball cleats. She would point like Babe Ruth in the direction she planned the hit to go and blast the ball out to the King Street fence. Then, run the bases full speed with her vail flying high in the wind. Funny how the ball never seemed to go where she had pointed. A distraction? Or a problem with her pointer? We never figured out. But we always wanted Sr. "Slugger" on our team.

Her zest for life, enthusiasm for teaching, the interest she showed in each of us ,then, and many years after, her sense of humour, her  devotion to her faith, commitment to community and her caring manner were an inspiration to my life and I'm sure many other young ladies of Loretto, Hamilton,(including my 2 older sisters Diana & Pat, as well as life long friend Karen Campbell).
While sister Herman is benched from this earthly game, we know she is enjoying her time batting in the big leagues.

Sister Herman taught me, Mary Masi, in grade eight when she was principal at St Joseph's school in  Hamilton.  She was a kind, loving and clever teacher and principal.  She was a great inspiration to me and to  all of her students.  Through the years I was with a group of her former students from Hamilton who met with her occasionally .   I was always astonished at how she remembered each of us, and my brother Vic Masi,  whom she also had taught.  She always encouraged us to work hard and to do our very best in loving God and our neighbours.  We will always remember her and we offer our condolences and prayers to her extended family and the IBVM Sisters with whom she served so well.  RIP.    Mary Masi Kiss

SR.Herman , was brilliant and a real gem . I  feel blessed to have known her ,  she always had an interest with what the children were doing . Will no doubt be missed , but loving and cherished memories will remain . I like to remember her words sometimes say " It's a great life if you don't waken " . I knew the latter was not a grammatical error it was just her humour  . Always shared a good laugh . My sympathy to her family  and all in her community . May she R.I.P .

Sr.Herman was my grade 6 teacher at St.Pius X in Toronto.She was very strict but,had a good heart.I miss those days in her class with my friends. I remember doing a puppet show on my own and making all the kids laugh.Until we meet again. Love Daniel

When I was just ordained I used to go to say mass at  the Loretto sisters on Brunswick Ave.   Herman was the sacristan and delighted in teaching me the trade of celebrating the eucharist in all of its various manifestations during the liturgical year.  Even then, and this was the late seventies, early eighties, she seemed frail and not long for this world but prairie stock triumphed, along with her dry sense of humour and her love for the the little ones of this world.  I am sorry I cannot attend her final liturgy but I will be saying masses for her in gratitude for her continuing friendship which started  some 40 years ago. My name is Gwen Hayes. I was a student of Sister Herman’s at St Joseph’s school in Hamilton. I was at her 100th birthday. I will have a mass said for her. She taught me in grade 8. I am 89 now and have considered her a lifelong friend. I will remember in my thoughts and prayers. God bless.
