Peacefully at Trillium Health Centre on Friday, August 9, 2013 in her 86th year. A beloved wife and mother, Hilkka is survived by her husband Paul, her sons Paul Raymond (Nancy) of Toronto and David (Enza) of Brampton and grandchildren Matthew and Laura. She was a second mother to nieces and nephews Lisa Stevens (the late Dan) of Sudbury, Mark Stevens (Kris) of Toronto, Paul Stevens (Naom) of Sudbury and Anna Gadsby (Tom) of Jordan. She was “Mummu Hilkka” to Samatha, Lucas, Tonde, Scott, Jordi, Michael, Christy and Ben and many other children of friends who called her Clear Lake kitchen home. Hilkka is also survived by brother-in-law William Stevens of Sudbury. She is predeceased by her parents Lempi and Emil, nephew Bill and her beloved sister Aura. Hilkka was born in Alajarvi, Finland and came to Canada at the age of nine with her mother and sister to join their father. She was a good student with a sharp and inquiring mind and wrote beautifully in Finnish and English. She enjoyed and was very proud of her work as an executive assistant for PPG Canada for 27 years. But it was in retirement that she really came into her own, volunteering for her church in Toronto and in Seguin Township, baking up a storm and caring for her family and friends at the lake. With an inherent respect for life, she would lay out seeds and berries and tend to all manner of fauna and flora around the cottage. She loved to garden. Her “equal opportunity” kitchen was filled with the laughter of all generations. A force of nature when she needed to be (e.g., in the face of a mindless bureaucracy), Hilkka was a deeply kind person who believed that all people were basically good. It was all about love for her and, regardless of the sadness of life, she loved unconditionally.
