Janice Ann Loftin (nee Warle) was overtaken by an aggressive cancer on September 16, 2015 in Toronto, ON at the age of 85. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Fred Loftin; her daughter, Cathy Loftin; her son, Glynn Loftin (Helen); her grandchildren Jenna, Chris, Ariana, and Celeste; and great-grandchildren Cillian, Aevlyn, Lucas, and Moksha. Also feeling a deep loss are her sister, Shirley Young; her brother, Henry Warle (Marge); and many nieces and nephews, especially Elaine Glennie.
Jan was born July 16, 1930 in Sudbury, ON. Her birth, as the first Chinese baby ever born in Sudbury, made local news. The family lived in Rouyn-Noranda and Malartic, QC, learning to speak French, before losing everything in a great fire and then moving to Longueuil, QC and shortly thereafter to Toronto.
Graduating in 1948 from University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce, Jan went on to Osgoode Law School. She left Osgoode to manage the family investment business and was then recruited as an accountant for Blue Ribbon Tea and Coffee Company. Later in her career, Jan transferred into education, teaching business in a number of Toronto high schools. After retirement, she spent 15 years as a docent for the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, ON. Through her commitment and sage guidance, Jan spent more than 25 years contributing to the work of women through the Canadian Federation of University Women and the Later Life Learning program at the University of Toronto.
Jan met Fred while working at Blue Ribbon on College Street and they were married August 28, 1954. They were blessed with three children, Glynn, Cathy, and Christopher. After Christopher sadly passed away at age 11, Jan took up teaching full-time. When the children grew up, Jan and Fred had the opportunity to travel and hike extensively all over the world, with visits to every continent.
Throughout her life, Jan maintained her strength, grace, and sense of humour to the end.
Friends & family are invited to gather for visitation on Monday, September 21 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel, 467 Sherbourne Street (South of Wellesley Street). Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, 354 St. Clair Ave. W. on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Thanks to the many staff at Kensington Hospice and Wendy Corber at CCAC for their excellent care and attention. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Sick Kids Hospital or Kensington Hospice would be deeply appreciated by our family.
