Joao de Sousa Melo

Joao was born on May 20, 1936 in Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal and passed away on February 9, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He will be missed by his wife of over 50 years, Maria Isabel. Joao is the loving father of Joe (Brenda), John (Silvana), and Nancy (Kam). Cherished grandfather of Ryan, Andrew, Cassandra, Anthony, Lucas, and Noah. Joao is the cherished brother of six siblings who loved him dearly.

Throughout his life Joao regularly divided his time between Toronto and Sao Miguel. In Sao Miguel he spent much of his days tending to his land, cultivating his crops for sale, and living an honest farmer's life. During the winter months he would return to Toronto where he devoted his time to catching up with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

During his later years Joao warmly embraced the addition of the newest member of the Melo family, his youngest grandson, Noah. During family gatherings Noah would often be found climbing and tugging on the ears of his vovó, which Joao did not mind. He cherished the time he had with all of his grandchildren and his spirit will be carried on by them for the rest of their lives.

Joao persevered with grace and dignity through cancer with the love and support of his family. Though his physical presence may be gone, his spirit, strength, and love will forever remain in our hearts

The family would like to especially thank the team and staff at Wesburn Manor. They are truly grateful for all of the people who cared for Joao in the past few years.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 12, 2024 at the Jerrett Funeral Home – St. Clair Chapel, 1141 St. Clair Ave. W. from 1:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-9:00pm.

Funeral Mass will take place at St. Clare Church, 1118 St. Clair Ave. W., on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 10am PLEASE NOTE: On the morning of the Mass, we would ask that all friends go directly to the church allowing the family some private time prior to the service. Entombment to follow at Westminster Cemetery, 5830 Bathurst St. Toronto.
