

Mr. Barwick was an Ontario high school teacher with a 30-year career. He was born in Montreal, Quebec but grew up in Ottawa and then Kingston, Ontario where he graduated from Queen’s University with a B.A. degree. After completing his B.Ed. at OISE in Toronto, he taught in various high schools in Ontario, including Toronto at Weston Collegiate. In 1971, he became the Art department head at North Grenville District High School in Kemptville, Ontario, where he worked for 15 years.
After retiring in 1986, he acted in community theatre with the Kemptville Players and later in Vancouver, B.C., worked as a movie extra, most notably in the original X-Files series, Season 4, Episode 4. He even had a small part in the Canadian independent film “Horsey” (1997).
He is pre-deceased by his first wife Edna Mabel Barwick (nee Ellis) (1999), and his brother Oliver Edwin ‘Ted’ Barwick (1994). He is survived by his three sons through his first marriage Michael Edwin, Geoffrey Matthew Lane, and John Ellis; and his grandchildren, Angus and Madelaine; and, second wife, Hazel.
Mr. Barwick was received into the Roman Catholic faith at the age of 88 after attending a Mass for the first time in his life at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. He felt a presence that led him to conversion through the R.C.I.A. and thereafter when he could, he participated fully in the 11:30 a.m. Sunday Mass and post-Mass brunch with other members of the Parish community.
Friends and family will be received at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5th from 7-9 pm. Funeral Mass to be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 520 Sherbourne Street, on Friday, October 6th starting at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name to Houses of Providence in Toronto.
