John Michael Hines

John Michael Hines passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on January 19, 1943, in Toronto, John was the youngest son of Joseph and Caroline Hines. A lifelong resident and a Torontonian through and through, he possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of his hometown, priding himself on knowing every street, shortcut, and landmark building within the city limits. His passion for Toronto was matched only by his keen interest in history and politics, subjects he discussed with insight and enthusiasm.

Above all, John’s life was defined by his devotion to his family. He was a man who found his greatest joy in the company of his loved ones, creating a wide circle of care that spanned generations. He was the cherished husband of Mary Waite and the much-loved father of Kelly, Stacey, and Chris (Jaime). John was also a proud step-father to Joseph, Jason, Shawna, and Megan; a doting step-grandfather to Nathan, Tyler, Mandy, Keith, Justine, Hailey, Ayden, Robert, Quinten, Mary-Anne, and Colby; and a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.

John’s presence was a cornerstone for his extended family, and his absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, which remained with him even at the end, his loyalty to his roots, and the quiet strength he offered to those he held dear. He will be deeply missed by all of us who love him.

An afternoon visitation will be held on February 16, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Jerrett Funeral Homes, located at 1141 St Clair Ave West, Toronto, Ontario, M6E1B1, Canada. An evening visitation will follow on the same day from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the same location.

The funeral service is scheduled for February 17, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Jerrett Funeral Homes.

The committal service will take place on February 17, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm at Prospect Cemetery, located at 1450 St Clair Ave W, Toronto, Ontario, M6E 1C6, Canada.
