ETERNAL REST GRANT TO HIM O LORD…
Comforted by the God he loved, on Sunday, February 7th, 2016 in his 92nd year, Leo peacefully passed away. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley (Marty; née Edwards and their 4 children: Laura Lee (Joseph Stesco); Kerry (Frances); Dona Lin (Terry Johnston); Paul (Edward McLean) and 8 grandchildren: Jacqueline, Nicholas, Thomas, Craig, Caitlyn, Robin, Alexandra and Erin.
After graduating from Ottawa Teachers’ College, Leo began his teaching career at the tender age of 18 with the Ottawa Separate School Board and later at the Provincial Polytechnical Institute in Hull, Quebec where he remained for 6 years. In 1952, he transferred to the High School of Commerce in Ottawa. In 1956 he was appointed by the Minister of Education as a separate school inspector in Ottawa and vicinity. Some 16 years later Leo was promoted within the Ministry of Education to the position of Superintendent of Curriculum. Four years later, he joined the Metropolitan Separate School Board (MSSB) as a supervisory officer and held the positions of Superintendent of Supervision, Superintendent of Secondary Schools and Deputy Director of the Board until he retired in 1981. He then served as Executive Director of the Archdiocesan High School Commission until 1991. In retirement, he formed an educational consulting firm, Ontario School Consultants and Resources, and related with school boards throughout the province.
Leo received several honors including the designations of Knight of St. Gregory and Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher from Pope John Paul II; the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal and the Centennial Medal from the Government of Canada; the Meritorious Award by the Archdiocese of Toronto; Merit Award by the MSSB; Phi Delta Kappa Medal in Education; Elementary School Principals’ Association, the Secondary School Principals’ Council and the Catholic Supervisory Officers’ awards of merit.
Friends may visit at the TRULL “NORTH TORONTO” FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 2704 Yonge St. (5 blocks south of Lawrence Ave.) on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 1:00 – 3:00pm and 6:00-9:00pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00am on Friday, February 12, 2016 at ST. MARGARET OF SCOTLAND PARISH, 222 Ridley Blvd., Toronto M5M 3M6 416-485-7781 (Avenue Road and Wilson Ave.).
