Sister Margaret Elizabeth Walsh, OLM died August 23, 2025 at Providence Healthcare after a lengthy illness. Predeceased by her parents Frederick Walsh and Margaret Collins, brothers Lionel and Andre and sisters Mary and Charlotte Fraser, Margaret is survived by her sister Denise Fox and many nieces and nephews.
Margaret was born on Allan’s Island, Lamaline, Newfoundland where she attended school. After completing a course at Memorial University in St. John’s NFLD she taught for two years. After entering the Congregation of Our Lady’s Missionaries in 1953 Margaret taught in St. Catharines, Ontario, continued her studies at the University of Ottawa and Toronto Teachers’ College and in 1966 was one of a group of four Sisters who opened a mission in Southern Leyte, Philippines.
In Southern Leyte, Margaret’s ministry included teaching and administration in three local high schools, and training Catechists in five parishes around the south Pacific coast of the island. When the community moved to Mindanao, another area of the Philippines, Margaret lived first in the small town of Binuangan. There she continued to work with Catechists as well as in Adult Education and Pastoral Ministry in the local parish. Later, in the city of Cagayan de Oro her main focus was on Pastoral Ministry in a poor area of the parish and at a residence for the mentally ill.
Margaret returned to Canada permanently in 2009 where she contributed to the life of the OLM community and the local parish. Wherever she was Margaret was quietly present and kind, willing to listen to other people’s problems and had unlimited patience and empathy for anyone in need.
Margaret spent the last years of her life as a resident of Providence Healthcare. We are grateful for the skilled and compassionate care she received from the staff there.
She will be missed by her family, her Sisters in Community and the many people with whom she served in the Philippines and in Canada.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday August 28th at Presentation Manor, 61 Fairfax crescent Scarborough.
A gathering in the chapel will begin at 11:30am until mass at 11:45am.
Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery will take place immediately after a lunch at Presentation Manor.
