My condolences to the Shaw family. 
I, too, worked with Paul at Metro Toronto. He was a pleasure to work with. He was diligent, resourceful and always ready with a quick smile. He truly was a good man.

I worked with Paul for a number of years at Metro Toronto in its Works Department.   Paul made major contributions to Toronto and its citizens as a front line protector against water pollution.    He was my partner for one year.   Paul was an eager and very helpful partner.  

On a personal level, Paul was always cheerful with a smile on his face and  a funny tale to tell.   He was a very good person.   He will be missed by all.

Wonderful attributes have been used to describe my father-in-law, Paul Shaw, and they are all very precise.  He was upbeat, positive, unassuming and never one to complain.  In fact, during his recent hospitalization, he tried valiantly to entertain us with his humour, and once, broke out singing Neil Diamond, to lighten our load, as we watched him become acutely ill.
I met my father-in-law many, many years ago.  He struck me, like so many others, as playful and fun-loving; and also, a man with great depth and no nonsense integrity.  When he was young, my husband remembers him as tough and determined to do well, for himself and his family.  His narrative was very much like my own father's  forced to leave his birth home in search of a better life.  
The story resembles Angela's Ashes  the youngest of 16 children, in a working-class Roman Catholic family, he grew up in the potteries of Stoke-on-Trent, in a 2 bedroom row house, and often talked about sleeping toe-to-toe with his brothers.  He loved and adored his sister Alice and maintained a close connection with her.  I always remember his dedication to Auntie Alice as quite profound.
He was self-taught  he could and would fix anything and he was brilliant with numbers.  Resilience comes to mind when I think about him, as he was able to live life to the fullest, even when life itself, posed many challenges.  We should all learn from his affirmative nature.
What you might not know about my father-in-law was that he could be quite fresh, especially, when in the company of his mate, Ken.  As a young woman, dating his son, he and Uncle Ken would joke with me, ask silly questions about random things and just have a laugh, in a most reverent way.  I'd like to believe that he was happy to have me in his family, as I have been blessed to be his daughter-in-law.
