February 25, 1933 – January 26, 2025
Our cousin Peter died peacefully in his bed at Main Street Terrace Long-term Care Home, in the early morning of Sunday January 26, just a month short of his 92nd birthday. He was born in Toronto to parents Marjorie (Higgins) Logan and Gordon Logan, and lived most of his life there. After his father was no longer in the picture, he had a close relationship with Alan Hill as his stepfather.
He grew up on Ranleigh Avenue in North Toronto and attended the local public school. Later he attended Northern Secondary School and took technical courses including drawing. He was also very interested in vehicles and engines, sharing an interest with Alan in motor bikes particularly. He spent summers helping Alan with the painting business and holidaying with his mother and aunt and her family at the cottage in the Humber Trails.
After graduation from high school, Peter was hired as a draftsman to work on the Avro Canada CF-150 Arrow interceptor aircraft. The family was very proud of his contribution to this project, and he was full of confidence about his career and the future. Unfortunately, on February 20, 1959, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker halted the development of the aircraft; and two months later all the materials to do with the aircraft were destroyed, and the lower level technical employees were shown the door. Peter recalled that the high level employees were immediately interviewed by recruiters from U.S. companies. He remembered with great sorrow his feelings at being laid off work that day and at the destruction of the airplane, and the event influenced his entire life. He took various other positions designing subway cars, but his heart was not in it.
He spent his leisure time researching his family roots on his father's side . He also read technical magazines and did a lot of technical research on aircraft engines and automobiles. His last job before retirement was working in security at the Ontario Science Centre in Don Mills. He enjoyed greeting the classes of school children and other visitors. He was also allowed to explain some of the technical displays to the school pupils. He was very happy working there. It is a blessing that he did not know the fate of the Science Centre in the last two years. Luckily, he had a pension and benefits from OPSEU, ensuring his financial security during his retirement.
He was predeceased by his brother Donald Logan. He is mourned by his niece Laura Logan (George Rowan) and family, his nephew Dean Logan, and his sister-in-law Lois (Pearce) Logan. He also leaves his cousins Vandra (Ward) Masemann and Kirsten Ward and their families.
The family expresses our thanks to the devoted nurses and personal care workers who took care of him at Main Street Terrace, and the medical staff at the Michael Garron Hospital.
He is resting at the Giffen-Mack and Trull Funeral Home Located at 2570 Danforth Ave.
