October 8, 1938 - January 12, 2014
Passed away with family by his side on January 12, 2014 at Sunnybrook after complications from surgery. Beloved husband and soulmate of 45 years to Jean. Loving father of Ron Jr. and Laura. Cherished grandfather and devoted hockey Gramps to Gabriel and Michael. Dear brother and ‘King’ to Barry Lillie (Elaine), and brother-in-law to Pat Carter (Brian). Will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. Fondly remembered by son-in-law Sean Mathews and extended family in S.A.
Ron graduated from Ryerson University in Radio Television Arts in 1960, where he was already showing signs of an entrepreneurial spirit, as a founding partner in establishing the RHO ALPHA KAPPA fraternity. He then went on to work at Foster Advertising for 12 years, ultimately as VP on the GM account. But his greatest success in the advertising days was finding the love his life, Jean who he met and married in the same year. When he and Jean had two young children, they took a leap of faith and Ron branched out on his own, founding Lauron Productions Ltd, an independent film and television company started in Toronto in 1975. And he never looked back. Soon after, he partnered with William Johnston and together developed Summerhill Entertainment, where Ron worked for the last 35 years, creating original programming for a Canadian and International market. The company continues today as Summerhill International, partnering recently with his daughter Laura, who carries on Ron’s legacy of connection and enlightenment through entertainment.
Ron leaves behind a life of meaning and inspiration. He believed in people and wanted to make the world a better place through film and television. He was a mentor to many, always making the time to meet with anyone who requested it. He was a pioneer in the industry and Ron gave a voice to new and up and coming filmmakers. His sharp mind, creative talent and communication skills made him a lasting force in the biz. And his kind heart made him a true giant to his family and those who knew him best.
A Celebration of his life will be held at COLLEGE STREET UNITED CHURCH (454 College Street, Toronto) on Monday January 20, 2014 at 1pm.
