Sylvester Wilberforce Taylor was born on Friday, November 10th, 1939, to Mr. Cyril Taylor and Mrs. Violet Burke Taylor in Airy Castle, St. Thomas, Jamaica. Sylvester was the Seventh of Twelve children by his father and mother. He also had Three additional siblings on his father’s side, making a total of Fourteen siblings.
Sylvester was a very Proud, Ambitious, Naturally Funny, Stylish and Successful Man. In his mid-teenage years, Sylvester became a Carpenter and a Cabinet Maker. He was always known to be a traveller. He would go back and forth from St. Thomas to Kingston, working as a Furniture Builder. In his late teenage years, he travelled frequently from Jamaica to the USA and England.
Sylvester relocated to England in his mid Twenties and opened his own furniture building and home renovation business. At the age of Thirty Five, he permanently relocated and moved his very successful business to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Up until his retirement, Sylvester had built furniture pieces and renovated hundreds of homes in Toronto, Richmond Hill, Brampton, Oshawa, and Scarborough. His floor plan designs were drawn by hand, and he built all his furniture from scratch. The level of his skilled craftsmanship and home renovation skills are permanently sketched in our city and hearts forever.
Sylvester was a wonderful father and family man. He was a naturally funny and straightforward person who stood up for everything that he believed in. He was a gentle father but rightfully tough when he needed to be. He passed on the knowledge of our past family history going as far back to the 1800’s to his children and grandchildren, expressing our proud and strong lineage. His words of wisdom and knowledge has taught us to be very proud of where we came from and who we are.
