This is Mrs. Fritz — a truly remarkable woman. Soft-spoken, full of grace, and endlessly kind. She touched our family in so many ways and always greeted us with warmth, love, and that gentle spark in her eyes. 💕

Our dear friend Isabel and her family have lost their beloved mother, Oma, and sister — a woman who lived an extraordinary 98 years. She embodied love, resilience, and quiet strength. Every conversation with her was a reminder of wisdom, humor, and a life so beautifully lived.

She will be deeply missed, but the imprint she’s left on every heart she touched will last forever. 🤍

This woman brought me her  biggest smile each time our eyes met. Between sharing past or  present experiences , recipes, family stories
and not to mention the triumphs she would have from a good card game! We shared giggles, tears, fears, hopes and anything else that we felt at that time. I miss her and always will. My life is richer because of knowing her. My heart will forever have her in it. I love you Valerie.  “Kiss the Skipper” will always be my favourite nail colour on you.  You are in my heart forever. When I first met Oma 43 years ago, I was attempting to charm her daughter Isabel. Oma was in the kitchen preparing Christmas dinner, and quickly I was the one being charmed by her smile, and did I mention her cooking!!   

I always said if you looked up “Oma” in the dictionary there should be a photo of our wonderful Oma.   

Although you won’t find it in her cookbook, one of my precious memories was going to Sammy’s restaurant that served a dish we both loved, liver and onions! Must admit Isabel did not share our enthusiasm but would always have a bite.  

The last time I saw Oma was on her 98th birthday, and I was amazed at how little she had changed since that day we first met.  

Oma lived a full and happy 98 years but we’ll miss her deeply.

I will always remember my Tante Valerie with my heart full of gratitude for the joy and kindness she brought into our lives. When I was a little, she was just a five minute bike ride away, always close—in distance and in heart. On a regular basis, she reminded me that happiness is found not in grand gestures, but in the warmth of shared moments, the comfort of familiar traditions, and the joy of just being together.
Her kitchen was a place of happiness, where chocolate cake and prune squares were generously shared and traditions came alive, always reminding us that food is more than sustenance—it is love made tangible. Her life was defined by love, positivity, and the ability to make others feel at home. She embodied comfort in times of need, joy in times of celebration, and kindness in every gesture.
Family nights with Tante Valerie alongside my parents, often stretched late, filled with card games (poker) laughter and the occasional disagreement? A true card shark, she played with wit and enthusiasm, making every hand of cards less about winning and more about togetherness. (However she did like to win – firm but fair!) 
Though she has left us physically, her legacy of love, compassion, and happiness lives on in the hearts of all who knew her. Tante Valerie’s ever-present smile touched everyone fortunate enough to know her and I will always carry her warmth in my heart. Mx

I met Mrs. Fritz in 1982 through Ed, and from the very first moment it felt like we’d known each other forever. She engaged with me in a way that was incredibly warm and compassionate. What started in Florida as that instant connection became one of the most important friendships of my life.

Mrs. Fritz never ceased to inspire me with her unconditional love and strong faith. Just being around her made me want to become a better person, and I truly believe I AM better for having had her as such a guiding light in my life.

Some of my favourite memories are the simplest ones:  sitting around a table with her and the Fritz family, playing cards and dice, laughing and feeling completely at home. She made space for me in her life in a way only a true mother figure can! She became my “Canadian mother”, and she affectionately referred to me as her “American son”. That’s how we saw each other, and that’s how I’ll always think of her.

I’m grateful for every year I had with her. For her kindness. For her loyalty. For her prayers ~ which I needed more than she knew. And yet somehow I think she DID somehow know how much I needed them!!!  

Even though I’ll miss her deeply, I smile knowing she lives on in my heart.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your lovely mother. She was an extraordinary woman—full of kindness, grace, and a gentle spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Soft-spoken and warmhearted, she had a remarkable gift for making people feel seen and special, her ready smile and caring presence lighting up every room.
It is truly extraordinary that she was able to spend her long and blessed life in her beloved home in Scarborough. I will always treasure my memories of playing in and around that house as a child. Seeing her again in California in 2017 felt like no time had passed—she was still the same sweet, radiant woman I had adored in my youth. On that visit, she brought me a red ceramic frog that now lives in our garden. It still graces our backyard today, and it reminds me daily of your mother’s warmth and thoughtfulness. I’ve included a photo of myself with this special red frog, which continues to symbolize her presence in my life.
I will forever remember her gentle smile, her big heart, and the light she brought wherever she went. She was deeply loved, and she will be deeply missed.

Dearest Isabel, Brad, Irene and Ed.

To you and all your families, we send our sincere condolences on the loss of your mom, a lady who leaves a legacy, of her long and fruitful life. We got to know this lovely lady through Isabel and Brad, it was more of a virtual relationship, as we had an opportunity to FaceTime Oma when Brad and Isabel were visiting PEI.  She had such a beautiful soft voice, a twinkle in her eye, and an amazing smile.  We felt like we knew a celebrity after watching her YouTube cooking videos. She was such a graceful woman in the kitchen. We were gifted with her lovely cookbook and will cherish that gift as a very special memory of Oma. I, Karen felt honoured when she coached me on how to make her chocolate cake, and after sending her pictures of the end product she complemented my work, that remains as a very special memory for me.

We always enjoyed sending Oma a birthday video, sometimes even with Elvis Presley!  We were so happy to have sent Oma our birthday wishes, as she celebrated this last birthday, surrounded by her beautiful family and enjoying her very own, most delicious chocolate cake made by Izzy! 

May the years of memories that you hold in your hearts, bring you comfort in the days ahead.  To grieve so greatly is to have loved so greatly.  Oma’s 98 years of grace,  strength and love will live on in all of the hearts she touched. Rest in Peace Oma.

I was blessed to have the honor to meet this beautiful soul Valerie Fritz. We became instant friends that last until the day the Lord called upon her. I'll forever treasure our conversation about our family and getting our nail 💅 done. My last conversation was on her birthday.  I called to wish her a happy birthday and she asked me how did you know, I said a little birdie told me. She laughed and said my sweet Bobbie. I'll miss her sweet smiles and loving hugs 🫂 🤗

I had the privilege of knowing Mrs Fritz(aka Oma) for 40 years through my friendship with Issy. She always had a smile on her face and a hug to give. A remarkable woman who is remembered and loved by all who were lucky enough to have met her.  Her legacy will
continue through  three generations of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She will be truly missed by all.

Dear Isabelle and Family.

I was very sad to find your Mom passed away recently.  Please accept my condolences.  We processed her taxes for several years, and it was always such a pleasure to see and talk to her.  She was a beautiful and kind woman who made everyone feel special.  Her photo made me smile as I remembered, so well, the times your Mom and Uncle Mike came into the office together. They both were so pleasant and made everyone smile.  It is wonderful that you and your entire family have such beautiful memories that will last forever.

I encountered "Cooking with Oma" by chance several years ago, and subsequently downloaded all the episodes from YouTube.

If I had to pick a favourite moment, it would be the one where she's wearing the Santa hat and says, "Ho! Ho! Ho!" at the top of the video - then, lightly complains, "My son is making me wear this hat."

"Oma" was delightful on camera, but I particularly admired her abilty to remain fully independent, living in her own home - by herself - until her time came to go.  We should all be as lucky as that.

And we should all be as lucky as Valerie "Oma" Fritz's family to have someone like her in our own families.  I convey my sincere condolences and best wishes to her family and friends.

To Irene, Isabel and Edgar. Please accept my heart felt condolences as I learned of the passing of your dear mother, friend and teacher.       Being a neighbour for many years we all shared casual hellos and I had even a chance while on trips home from university to visit your mom , always know as Mrs Fritz.  She was a dear friend to my mother Aileen who also shared a closeness  in birth dates and age.  I particularly  enjoyed the story of her life that Mrs. Fritz relayed to all who would watch OMA.  Mrs Fritz will be remembered by me  as a person with a wonderful cheery smile and a kind hello.

It was with great sadness when I heard of the sudden passing of your mother,  my Tante Valerie. There are no words that can express my feelings of loss. She was so full of love and bestowed that love to all who came to know her. Such a positive force for all things good in life.  An inspiration for us all and a great cook!
I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with her one last time on her birthday. She was with all her children in celebration and she said that meant the most to her. Nothing else mattered. She said she was tired and needed help getting around and she mentioned my parents who have passed. 
Last of a generation. You are gone but you have touched us all and I will always remember my Tante Valerie.

Your mom — our sweet Oma — was such a special person to all of us. She always welcomed us as her own grandkids with so much love, warmth, and kindness every time we saw her. We will always remember her gentle smile, her caring heart, and the way she made everyone around her feel cherished.

Dear Irene, Isabel and Ed,
Our mom's were best friends.  The kind of best friends that others can only wish for.  They found each other later in life, yet they had so much in common: their European heritage, cooking, baking, love for their families and friends, and of course playing cards at the Scarborough Senior Centres and at home.  When Ed and I went to high school together, we could not have predicted that years later our moms, who hadn't yet met, would become besties.  When my mom passed away in 2023, she somehow passed the friendship torch to me, and Valerie and I became friends.  We would facetime, email and phone each other and this new relationship kept my mom alive for both of us.  I feel blessed to have had this time with Valerie.  Your mom will be missed.

I read in the paper about the passing of your Mom .  I remember going to your house many years ago.  I don’t think I remembered that she was born in Hungary, as was my husband. All the best. She certainly lived a long life and how lucky to still be in her own home.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences on Tante Valli's passing.  While it undoubtedly feels "too soon," 98 years is an impressively long run worth celebrating!  Your mom enjoyed the cherished gift of living out her life in her own home, independently, supported by her loving, vigilant kids. 

Her melodious, soothing, Hungarian-accented voice has lived in my head since childhood.  (Not to mention her impish, mischievous giggle).  What a well-lived life: her marriage to Uncle Johnny, caring for her family, her cooking (Chicken Paprikash) and baking (Nuss Strudel), her faith, her close relationships with her siblings, playing cards (in person and virtually on her iPad), and in her later years, the evolution of her YouTube persona in "Cooking with Oma."  That audience will miss her culinary classes (serious business), as well as her gentle smiles.  Not to mention the bloopers.  

Tante Valli and my late mother, Stephanie, were friends for almost 80 years.  They met in Toronto as young women just starting out, with Tante Valli having recently immigrated from Hungary.  Deep, enduring friendships of that longevity seem all the rarer these days, and therefore are all the more precious.  I picture the two of them, excitedly embracing each other in Heaven, then scurrying off to have a good catch-up and some laughs, as they often did.

No doubt you find yourselves at that odd and curious intersection of emotions where grief inevitably leads most loved ones experiencing this kind of sudden loss: gratitude and celebration, mixed with sorrow and mourning.  Find comfort in the love she had for her family, and as you reflect on her lifelong, steadfast faith.  Few would argue that the Pearly Gates swung wide open upon her arrival - iPad and deck of cards in hand.

Tante Valli's imprint, and her distinctive, loving voice will remain with me for the rest of my life.  She will always occupy a special niche in my heart.

Irene, Isabel, Ed and Families.  My prayers and thoughts are with you all.  Tanti Valerie was always, a warm, loving, accepting, safe place, I could land.  Her voice brought me peace, and I'm reminded of many fond memories of my childhood.  She has filled in for Tanti Shelley many times in the past few years, and we could share The Lord together.  Who would have thought I forgot the sour cream in the Goulash all these years, but then, Tanti Valerie added flavour to everything!  Love you all, Ginny

Tante Vali was a most wonderful and beloved Mum to the three of you, yet she was also the long-standing Matriarch and guiding light of the Scheibli clan, a friend and mentor to her community and church, a teacher and an inspiration to her extended cooking family and fans worldwide, and most importantly the most beloved mother, aunt, sister, cousin, grandmother and god-given friendly inspiration to so, so, so many. 
Now that is something to be proud of and to cherish in her memory. 
At first, it may seem that the light in the world has dimmed somewhat by her passing, but in fact, it shines brighter in and by the love and reverence and in the memories of all those she touched, blessed and loved in all her wonderful years. 
I love you all and wish I could help take away the pain and loss you all feel. 😔
