

Brissenden, William Guy, P. Eng., peacefully at home in his 98th year. Predeceased by his beloved and loving wife of almost 50 years, Jean Winnifred (Hammond). Enjoyed times with companion Jean Jones in his later years. Father to Richard (Bernadette), Janet (Bill), Jane and Robert (Bonny). Grandfather to Claudia (Dany), Annemarie, Neiland (Lydia), Craig, James (Melanie), Karyn (Ian), Christopher (Caitlin), Geoffrey and Amanda. Great-grandfather to Ben, Molly and Simon. Fondly remembered by sisters Harriet and June, and predeceased by six siblings. Much admired by Amir and Yen Yen Syed. Bill was born in Halifax on March 28, 1915, and obtained a B.Sc. degree in mining engineering from McGill University in 1937, followed by an M.Sc. in 1938. As a naval officer during the Second World War, he solved classified technical problems that helped win the Battle of the Atlantic. After the war, he joined Noranda, where he was known for championing safety and technical innovation. He led the management team that successfully developed Gaspé Copper’s mine, mill and smelter in Murdochville, Quebec, as well as the team that transformed Brunswick Mining and Smelting into a major zinc-lead producer in New Brunswick. After retiring from Noranda in 1975, he consulted to the mining industry, including Patino N. V., and served on the boards of a number of mining companies. He was inducted into the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame in 1991 in recognition of his many achievements as a mining executive, entrepreneur, consulting engineer and business mentor. The family wishes to thank Marvin Salvador, Joe Posawetz and Maria Gill for making Bill’s last years so comfortable. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at the Trull “North Toronto” Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 2704 Yonge Street, Toronto. The funeral will be held Friday, October 19, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto.
