In Loving Memory of Barbara Lynne Chayer Hayden
Barbara "Barb" Lynne Chayer Hayden was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She went home to her Lord on May 13, 2024, at the age of 78.
Barbara was born on June 14, 1945, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, to Walter Francis Chayer and Dorathea Mae Conant Chayer. From a young age, Barbara had a heart for helping others. As a child and young adult, she assisted a local flower street vendor in the evenings, served lunches in the school cafeteria, and volunteered to re-shelve books in her school and local library. After high school, she worked as a secretary for Title Insurance, Escrow and Trust, and the United States Air Force.
At the Los Angeles Air Force Base, Barbara met the love of her life, Howard. They were married on February 3, 1968, at St. Andrews Church in Redondo Beach, CA. While Howard served in the Air Force, Barbara dedicated herself to raising their four children. In 1983, she re-entered the workforce as a secretary for the Torrance Unified School District, spending her career at Calle Mayor Middle School in South Torrance. Known as the "Queen of Calle," Barbara was beloved by staff, students, and families alike, leaving a lasting legacy. In the words of her co-workers, “Barbara will always be a legend at Calle.” She retired in August 2015.
Barbara had many passions. She loved baking birthday cakes for her children, making holiday treats, and cooking favorite dishes like pot roast, meatloaf, spare ribs, and chili con carne. An active parent, she served as a PTA member and president, Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and Tordondo Little League volunteer. She enjoyed music, shopping at Macy’s, art, watching The Masked Singer, and following sports, especially football and baseball. She was an enthusiastic supporter of her grandchildren’s activities. She never missed a game or event. Barbara also had a deep love for books, a passion that began when her father taught her to read and grew to include comic books, novels, and mysteries. She could spend hours at Bookoff or Barnes and Noble.
Barbara is survived by her four children, Kim (Chris) Lee, Bobbie (Scott) Diekmann, Jackie (Jeff) Forney, and Bert (Carmen) Hayden, and her nine grandchildren, Kyla, Caryn, Jason, Jesi, Isabella, Cody, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Matthew. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Howard (8/13/19).
A viewing is scheduled for 5-8 pm on June 14, 2024, and a funeral service at 10:30 am on June 15, 2024, at Lighthouse Memorials and Receptions - Rice Center, 5310 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90505. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Lovejoy Foundation at lovejoyfoundation.org.
The family extends special thanks to Torrance Memorial Hospice and her devoted caregivers, Maricel, Elizabeth, Reyna, Miguel, April, and Astrid.
John 11:25-26, Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die.”
