On October 25th 1937, in Cleveland Ohio, Charles Edward Byers Sr, and Cloteal Adams was blessed with the birth of their second child, Charles Edward Byers Jr. He attended Bolten Elementary, Audobon Junior High and John Adams High School, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Louise Richardson, in September of 1956. They shared 10 years of marriage, during which time their union blessed them with three children, Charles III, Charlotte and Sherrilynn.
Directly following school, he went to work at H.K Porter as a machinist. He later went to work in his father's company, where he learned and mastered the precepts of 'business'. This inspired him to want to work for himself. As a result, he became an entrepreneur - owning several small businesses including the Peppermill Lounge and Hilltop Market.
In 1968, Charles married Letha Slatton, his second wife, which lasted for 5 years. They had a son, named Gregory. Charles married again to Gloria Ann Byers, who precedes him in death. Lastly, he married Judy Byers.
He enjoyed entertaining and spending time with close friends and family. The consummate host, he often threw parties in Oakwood Village, at "the farm", where as many as a hundred people gathered to have a good time. Charles was more commonly known as 'Chuck', but his 'closer' friends knew him as "Charlie Bugger". He was a loyal and devoted friend to the end.
In 1997, Chuck retired and moved to Los Angeles. He be-friended several of his children's friends and later became known as "Pops". He was always present at all the special occasions and was known for his storytelling, quick wit and clever chess game. He loved talking about politics, and was an avid TV watcher of the History channel and CNN news, as well as staying up on current events. Witnessing our first Black President was one of the proudest moments of his last few years.
Chuck loved to bar-b-que and created a mouthwatering sauce, which he passed down to his children. Cooking for others was one of his favorite things to do. He always looked forward to spending time with his best friend, Ron Kimball and his family, where his company and charming personality were always enjoyed.
He leaves to mourn, his children - Charles E. Byers, III, Charlotte Byers-Jourdain, Sheri Byers-Spellman & Gregory A. Byers; Grandchildren - Darrell Calhoun, Ketra Byers-Whitfield, Kourtney Calhoun, Rheya Spigner, Gregory Byers, Jr., Juanita Byers, Austin Byers, Benjamin Byers & De'Annie Byers; Great-grandchild, Randall Whitfield, and a host of extended family members and many friends.
In his past year, he opened his life to Jesus Christ.
John 3:16
