to Creasie and Wendell Reed in Los Angeles, California. He
was a true middle child having 4 older brothers, 2 younger
brothers and 2 younger sisters. In 1958 the family relocated
to Shreveport, Louisiana where they embraced the country
life. Darrell loved to tag along with his older brothers.
Together they worked along with their father in the
family cleaning service, enjoyed playing outdoors and being
mischievous.
In his later years, Darrell’s greatest joy were his grandchildren
Najai, Delron “Jr.”, Makayla and Makhi. He
loved being “PawPaw”. His love, his personality, his
humor, his toughness and most of all his big heart is how
he will be remembered. Darrell is survived by his wife:
Barbara Ann Reed, daughters: Roshone (David), Lawanda
(Delron), and Creasie, son: Charles, grandchildren: Najai,
Delron Jr., Makayla and Makhi, 7 siblings and over 35
nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son
Darrell Timothy Reed II.
The family lived there until his Father’s untimely death in 1966, after which they returned
to Los Angeles. Eventually the family settled down on 52nd street where their
house became known as “the big house.” Growing up during the 1970’s in Southern
California with 6 brothers and 2 sisters proved to be an adventure. However, his
favorite past time was spent in the kitchen with his Mother learning to cook.
Cooking quickly became his passion and soon he was cooking for the entire family.
Darrell honed his cooking skills, became a fluent speaker of Spanish, and spent his
career as Head Chef at several of LA’s top restaurants. He also had a passion for
sports, cars, fashion, dominoes and playing jokes on loved ones.
In the summer of 1977, Darrell met Barbara Ann Rodgers in
Los Angeles. Darrell’s mother Creasie used to see Barbara
around town with her 2 daughters and would tell him “see, that’s
the kind of wife you need son!” Barbara herself had seen Darrell
around town and wondered “who that handsome man was.”
Life soon brought them together and later they were married on
October 18th, 1986. Together they raised their family, daughters
Roshone, Lawanda and Creasie and sons Charles and Darrell II.
He took great pride in his children and their accomplishments and always
encouraged them to be hard workers. As the family grew with nieces, nephews and
grandchildren, his house became the gathering spot. As he had done since childhood,
he loved to cook and entertain his relatives. To his nieces and nephews he was
affectionately known as “Uncle Darrell”. He looked after his sibling’s children as if
they were his own and was there to lend a helping hand when needed.
