Eva J. Johnson

Eva Jane Johnson was born September 19, 1937, in Somerville, Texas to Jim and Etta Gentry. She was the youngest of four children, all of whom preceded her in death. Eva graduated from Emmett J. Scott High School in Somerville, TX and attended Prairie View A & M University in Prairie View, TX. She was a member of the Somerville Church of God, where she learned and grew in her knowledge of Jesus Christ. On September 23, 1956, she married Walter Johnson and moved to Los Angeles, CA. They were happily married for 62 years and raised six children together.

In Los Angeles, she was a faithful member of Wadsworth Church of God for nearly 60 years, and it was there that she committed her life to Jesus Christ. She joined Center of Hope in 2018. Eva was a devout Christian, loyal wife, and loving mother. She was always active in the church, serving on the Deaconess Board, Benevolent Committee, Vacation Bible School, Youth Department, and the Choir. Above all, she had the heart of an evangelist. For over 60 years, until the very end, she shared and sang the gospel and passed out tracts to almost everyone with whom she came into contact. Whenever she sang, her melodious, alto voice lifted up the name of Jesus and encouraged heavy hearts. Her heart’s desire was that everyone be saved.

Eva was an incredibly thoughtful, loving, and generous woman. She was the one who called people to see if they were okay, sent them a card with a gift to offer condolences, visited people in the hospital to encourage and comfort them, and was a very present help for many people in their greatest times of need. Eva did those things quietly because she was not looking for adoration or praise from others, but was merely doing what she believed Christians are supposed to do — be the hands and feet of Christ in both word and deed. The impact of her love and legacy for Jesus Christ is immeasurable.

Shortly after having a heart attack, she entered into eternal rest. She would like to be remembered as one who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of her soul from sin. Eva fought the good fight, she finished the race, and she kept the faith. Still, she will be missed more than words can express.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Walter Johnson. Her children, Walter Johnson and his wife, Beverly, and their son, David; Loren Keith Johnson and his wife, Deborah, and their children, Brisa and Isaac; Eric Johnson and his wife, MeLisa, and their children, Alisa, Aspen and Eric Jr.; Derrick Johnson; Etta Carter and her husband, Gregory, and their daughter Tiffany; and, Alice Scott and her husband, Manuel, and their children, Manuel, Christopher and Berkeley; one great-grandchild, Josiah and a host of dearly beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
