Born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 30, 1926, Luis moved to Mexico with his family as a young child. He returned to the United States in his early 20s and began residing in the South Bay in the late 1940s.
Luis had a great passion for running, having taken up the sport when he was 58 years old, following the birth of his first grandchild. He ran four marathons at the age of 68. He also ran numerous 5K, 10K and half marathon races, winning many awards for his age group.
Although receiving limited formal schooling himself, Mr. Cordova continually sought new knowledge and information. He valued education and was very proud that his three sons graduated from college, earning a total of seven college and post-graduate degrees.
April 1st was an important day for Luis. This was the day he married his loving wife Ysabel (Chavela). It was also the day that he began his 28 year tenure working at Harvey Aluminum in Torrance, as well as his retirement day.
Luis took great pride in beautifying his home. He was an avid gardener, caring for his many flowers and fruit trees. His efforts were recognized with an award from the City of Torrance. The Cordovas also created their own holiday displays, including a large wooden train and thousands of lights, which delighted numerous families over the years.
Luis was a member of Steelworkers Local 6900. Mr. and Mrs. Cordova were among the founding parishioners of St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church.
Luis is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ysabel; sons Arturo, Ricardo, and Carlos; and their spouses, Valerie, Jane, and Beth, all of whom he dearly loved. He is also survived by his niece, nephews, and grandchildren.
