Sal, called Badit by his family, was born August 1935 in Cavite City, Philippines. During the WWII occupation of the Philippines, his father was slated to be arrested for insubordination, which prompted the family to flee to the mountains where they lived for several years. This experience had a profound effect on Sal, leading to a lifelong fascination with WWII (particularly the Pacific campaign) as well as an affinity for almost-constant air conditioning - no camping or intentional roughing it for Sal after the war!
Later, he attended Mapua University where he met Eden, to whom he was married for over 63 years until her passing in 2023. They bravely took civilian jobs for the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, and were in Saigon during the Tet Offensive, with family in the Philippines on edge until their safe return home. Eventually Sal and Eden relocated their family to the United States in the early 1970s, living in Monterey Park, CA; Bronx, NY; Orangeburg, NY, and then in Houston, TX and Richmond, TX, where they would happily reside for decades before moving to Torrance, CA for the last years of their lives.
Sal worked as a civil/structural engineer for many years at various corporations before his retirement. He was an endless source of his own brand of "dad jokes," often starting long driving family trips with the phrase "If you need to go to the bathroom, speak now or forever hold your pee!" Sal was a fan of James Bond, music (especially violin, which he played) and abundant Texan free beverage refills. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis. But his greatest pastime of all was spending time with the love of his life Eden - ballroom/line dancing at various Filipino American community gatherings and parties, traveling (especially on cruises), Filipino food (her cooking it, his eating it), karaoke, and being together with their family.
Since Eden's passing last year, Sal had fortunately found comfort and enjoyment in assorted activities and events with friends/staff at his assisted living facility, Clearwater at South Bay, as well as meals (Jollibee's, Lucille's Smokehouse, assorted Filipino establishments, Olive Garden, Subway) with his California family members, especially Shirley, whom he called his Angel.
He is survived by his son Romeo DiPasupil and wife Evelyn “Gigi” Galeon; daughter Shirley Day and partner Scott Klatte; daughter Sally Stokes and husband Jon; daughter Sharon Benerofe; and grandchildren Anthony DiPasupil, Kevin DiPasupil (Rachel Chen), Daniel Stokes, Sarah Stokes, Jacob Stokes, and Caruso Benerofe; sisters Luz, Paz and Norma, and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his wife Eden, parents Dionisio and Julita, brothers Salvador, Dominador, Cesar, Dionisio Jr., sisters Heroina, Fely, Evangelina and Guia, and son-in-law Greg. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday November 2nd in Torrance, CA.
