Alex Matus

Alex was born on Aug. 5, 1928 in Flint, the son of George and Mary (Lazur) Matus. After his discharge from the United States Army, Alex went back to school, graduating from Ferris Institute with a degree in Pharmacy. In 1950, Alex married Helen Szegedy and helped to raise their six children. He worked as a Registered Pharmacist at Shiawassee Medical Care Facility and then at a drug store in Owosso for many years. Alex enjoyed gardening and fishing, especially his annual fishing trips to Canada.

Alex is survived by his wife, Helen Matus; children, Richard Matus, Stephen (Kimberly) Matus, Mary (Calvin) Springer, Mark (Vona) Matus, and Matthew (Tina) Matus; grandchildren, Stephen Jr., Tamara, Jill, Melissa, Andrew, Jenna, and Dylan; and great grandchildren, Stephen III, Kyle, Benjamin, Austin, Erik, Lillian, Jaxson, and Cameron. Preceding him in death are his parents, George and Mary Matus; son, Gary Matus; and grandson, Michael Springer.

A Mass from the Order of Christian Burials will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 27 at 11 am, with visitation starting at 10 am at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church.
