

Derry was born on March 23, 1928 in Alanson, Michigan. He was a Boy Scout as a boy and earned his Eagle Scout. Derry enlisted in the US army on June 11, 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1947. In 1950, he began working at Cone Drive Gear until his retirement 38 years later. He also attended the University of Michigan extension program where he studied real estate for three years. Derry was a life time member of the American Legion. He enjoyed making his rounds to all of his American Legion buddies in the long term facilities. He also enjoyed spending time at the cabin, where he found peace. More than anything, he loved his family. Derry was known for two remarks; “You damn kids” and “What a good day in the neighborhood”.
In 1947, Derry met his first wife Agnes Pierson in Mt. Pleasant. They were married in 1949 at the Methodist Church in Clare. Together they had four children. Derry and Agnes were married for 17 years.
Derry then met Margaret Hekel at Tom’s Food Market in Traverse City. They were married on April 15, 1971 in Manistee. Margaret passed away in June of 2002. She had two sons.
On May 13, 2006, Derry met Cheryl at the Traverse City Senior Center. They were married on February 8, 2007. Together, they enjoyed dancing and spending their winters in Florida. Cheryl loved to cook for Derry but he also enjoyed his favorite restaurants, Ponderosa and Golden Corral.
Derry is survived by his wife Cheryl Williams, Children: Derrilyn (Steve) Robertson, Greg (Donna) Williams, and Mark (Nancy) Williams, Daughter-in-law Julie Williams, step sons: Greg and Peter Hekel, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces , nephews, and many other loving family members. Besides his parents, Derry was preceded in death by his son Stewart Williams.
A visitation was held Wednesday, July 19, 2017 from 10-11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St., Traverse City, MI. The funeral began at 11 a.m., also at the church. Derry was laid to rest next to his second wife, Margaret, at Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in Derry’s name were directed to the family. Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
